ANY GREAT PLAY IDEAS THAT YOUR TODDLERS LOVE?

girlygirluk · 26/02/2006 12:40

Hi.
Am trying to think of some new ideas for spending play time with my two toddlers (3 AND 2YR) and some that they do on their own.
We occassionally do playdoh, painting, baking. But I have to say that all these things are 'only occasionally' because with two toddlers its difficult to keep everything under control and not end up with paint everywhere IYKWIM!
Just wondered if any other mums out there have any good ideas to keep the play we do together a bit fresh and different for them and ME!
And also any play ideas that keeps your little ones amused for a while, that they can get on with on their own.
Thank you

There is no great secret or anything btw, I just thought it would be a bit long and boring for anyone else!

fastasleep · 26/02/2006 19:04

Fullmoonfiend · 26/02/2006 19:55

Actually Franny, me too! How! How!
I have been teased for years about my ability to turn rubbish into items of play value - would love to earn a living out of it. Do I need an Ology??
(you may as well have just posted 'long and boring' explanation)

Shops: Empty the cupboards of little packets, bottles etc & have a till & a shopping basket. Mine loved that!

FrannyandZooey · 26/02/2006 19:56

I haven't called you Hodcarrier for a while, have I, Hoddy?

Fullmoonfiend · 26/02/2006 20:10

If we are to be bark dsciples, may I refer to you as the Barking One? Or would that be disrespectful...

Fullmoonfiend · 26/02/2006 20:12

oh crap., I've dissed the Barking One twice now. Now I'll never gain enlightenment!

FrannyandZooey · 26/02/2006 20:12

I think that would be most acceptable

Have CATted or emailed everyone who asked me to.

My 2yr old's fave games / toys are...

Aquadraw /Leap pad thingy / Pizza set from Argos (I have made some menus and she loves playing 'pizza time'), Snap (with number cards from ELC), pairs (again with the little cards from ELC), sticking... buy lots of kids glue and a collage set / random bits and bobs and they'll spend minutes sticking it all on and hours trying to get the glue of their fingers!

HTH x

fastasleep · 26/02/2006 22:06

Nemo! Nemo! We could run a playgroup together! Oh the weird and wonderful possibilities....

Nemo1977 · 26/02/2006 22:25

lol FA it is really interesting isnt it. I like the fact it is something that goes across the board if that makes sense so easy to engage A and H at the same time.

Twiglett · 26/02/2006 22:28

oy as the first one to take the michael how come I'm not getting any emails on making my fortune the bark chewing way???

Sugarmag · 27/02/2006 12:42

my two (2.5 & almost 5) love to have picnics/go to the beach/go camping/go on holidays etc. All variations on the same theme really. Large blanket on the floor of the bedroom, a few props and they're off. If it's a picnic day they spread out their plastic tea set and I usually give them a few real snacks to go with it. If it's a beach day it involves changing into swimsuits & sunhats and two large blankets (one for the beach and one to be the water). If it's camping I string a large sheet from the top of dd's bed to the dresser and they sit on said large blanket under the sheet with the tea set and a torch. You get the idea.

Also, lately we've had a lot of superheroes/knights/dragons type play. DS searching for dragons under all the beds adn in all the cupboards. Or DS chasing DD with a green wand calling himself Mr. Yuck ("I make you all yucky with my wand!!"). She uses her superpowers to escape the yuck.

The whole play therapy thing sounds great! Do you know if there are any training opportunities avaiable in scotland?

Elibean · 27/02/2006 16:29

my 2.2 year old loves nothing better than to play 'birthdays': all her toys have had birthdays, I have had so many birthdays that I'm now about 124 years old, she has birthdays every day....and they only involve a teaset (with toy cake and candles), an old ribbon (to wrap around 'presents') and occasionally a sock (xmas stocking: her b'day is very near xmas, she is confused).

TBH, the most useful toys she's ever had have been small animals/dolls with which hours and hours of drama have been played out. And the teaset.

freshstart · 03/03/2006 22:09

bumping this for Frannyandzooey - can you tell me more about heuristic play.

Im a childminder and have DS of 2.5 and DD of 6 of my own

I also mind a 6 month old, 9 month old, 18 month old, 20 month old and almost 3 year old.

Would love some ideas on heuristic play for all of them

Can I have the email too? rebecca.roll at btinternet.com

thanks
