What word describes the stage between 'newborn' 'baby' 'toddler' and then 'teenager'?

I can't think of the word to describe my 4yo. Like before I would say 'my baby and my toddler'.

'child' I suppose.

Pre-schooler?

Grockle · 01/03/2012 18:02

Preschooler?

I just say '6 yr old' or DS

BellaBearisWideAwake · 01/03/2012 18:04

Ok. I don't like that word! Don't know why though. Yes, '4yo' would do fine!

Child. Or son/daughter.

You have several possiliies: pre-schooler, pre-teen, (primary) school-age child. Or just child will do.

"My child" sounds a bit strained, it doesn't sound like "my baby" (which I am clinging too despite all the toddling evidence to the contrary. I think "my daughter" sounds more natural, for what it's worth.

Preen-ager ?

ExitPursuedByaBear · 02/03/2012 10:31

Tweenies - which unfortunately is reminiscent of the tv programme, or my friend and I used to refer to our collection of DDs as twirls.

VenusWineTrap · 02/03/2012 21:40

I always say 'my little girl', think that's quite nice.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 03/03/2012 08:22

Child is fine in the singular, but sounds weird when you say 'my baby and my child'

YY little girl/boy works :)

DonInKillerHeels · 03/03/2012 08:23

My little boy; my son.

BertieBotts · 03/03/2012 08:24

"My teenager" sounds odd too though. You'd say "My teenage son/daughter". So perhaps it's just that once they get past toddlerdom it seems strange not to state their gender.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 03/03/2012 08:25

'my baby and my little boy' yes that works. As long as ds1 doesn't overhear - 'I'm not little!!'

My little boy. Definitely. Or sometimes I'd he's playing up 'the little shit'. Wink
