When did you give baby a duvet and pillow? Or did you stick with sleeping bag until they went to a bed?

DS is 14 months and has always been in sleeping bags since going from Moses basket to cot, with no pillow. I am now starting to wonder if he wants a small pillow and would prefer a duvet, as whenever he co-sleeps in with me he always wiggles himself up so his head is on the pillow, or rests his head on my arm, and also seems to sleep better when he can roll over properly (I think the sleeping bag restricts him a bit). I'm a bit nervous because of the suffocation risks, but am I right in thinking after 12 months this isn't considered a problem? Am also concerned that if I give him a duvet he'll roll out of it and wake up as he's cold, but I suppose we'd just have to see if that's an issue. What did other people do with their dcs at this age? Also, if you switched to a duvet, any recommendations for cot ones? The only ones I've found online are cot beds. I could just use blankets I guess, but that's a lot of layers to be tucking in all the time.

dd had a pillow from 1 year and stayed in her grobag till 18 months (went into a big bed at around 2years). DS had a goi goi pillow from a few weeks old to help prevent flattening of his head and stayed in a grobag until he went into a big bed at 2 1/2 years. We used one of those cot quilts rather than a duvet when in the cot and got a proper single sized duvet when they went into a big bed

DD1 slept in her sleeping bag until she moved into a bed at around 2.5. I think I gave her a pillow at around 18 months or so.

DS is nearly 2 and has had a pillow for about 4 months, not that he particularly uses it! We're holding off on the duvet for now and will use the grobags until he's outgrown them.

My son is 2 and a half and has just started asking for a pillow, so I will get him one this weekend.

dd is 17months and has been using a duvet/pillow since it started getting cold again as she took her sleeping bag off and threw it at us repeatedly to show us she was no longer putting up with them.

I got cot duvet+pillow+duvet covers from ikea. Much cheaper than elsewhere though as usual they are non-standard sized so you are restricted to buying covers from them. Cheap though and she keeps it on better than I thought she would.

Wegot DS a pillow from 12 months but I put it under the sheet. He had a grobag and was in a cot. At 20 months we switched to a bed and duvet but only the cot pillow (smaller and flatter). Kept the pillow under the sheet. DS found the duvet too hot at first (4tog) so kicked it off so switched to a blanket. He took a few months to work out how to pull the covers back on but several months later he's fine.

DS is 22mo and still has a sleeping bag at night. I usually find him sideways or upside-down when I get him out of his cot in the morning so a duvet would be a nightmare to keep on. I put a pillow under his mattress at about 16mo to help with his breathing when he had a cold and gave him a proper pillow from about 19mo.

DS was in his cot with a duvet and pillow from 18mo, he was far too long for his sleeping bag.

Occasionally he'll have an arm or leg out when I go and check on him before I go to bed an I just tuck him back in. He loves having the freedom to move about in his cot more and stand up and switch the light on to "read"
I use the cot bed duvet, it is a little squashed in his cot as we haven't yet turned this into a cotbed.

He is perfectly fine with a pillow, first few times he threw it out but when he was a bit poorly with a bad cough, it helped and he's never chucked it out since!

My DD had a pillow from 1 year, possibly 11 months. It was a looooong time ago so don't recall exactly.

SucksToBeMe · 04/01/2012 14:57

My DS had a pillow at 6 mths.

DS2 has had a pillow since about 9/10 mths but he has a big pillow rather than a small cot one. We got DS1 a cot bed sized one and found he kept 'falling off it' as it was small and he liked to move around in his sleep, so found an 'adult' one fits the width of the cot bed perfectly and means he doesn't move it about, risking it sitting on his head. DS2 is still in sleeping bags at 18mths and we'll keep him in them til he grows out of them - both my boys are such 'active' sleepers that duvets are no good!
