3.11 yo DS nervous and wont socialise with other children

We have just returned from a weeks holiday. It became apparent how nervous and unsocial our DS is. There were lots of other children on the camp site and at the club. DS was desperate to play but if any of the children came up to him he would turn his head and not look or talk back. He has developed a habit of putting his fingers in his mouth when nervous and as soon as we got to the club house they were straight in even though the highlight of each day was going to the "dancing pub". We tried encouraging him to talk to the other children and to play but he just wouldnt do it.

He goes to pre school 5 mornings a week and loves going. He only really plays with a couple of other children there. He is starting school in September and we are worried about how he will cope as the children he does play with are going to different schools.

How can we get him to become more confident and social?

Sounds normal enought behaviour, really. Especially for first born.
He just needs to mature more, and gain some confidence, which he will in his own time.

Are some friends moving up from pre-school to school with him?

There is one boy going to his school which we are encouraging him to play with more. TBH he seems to have got worse since the birth of our DD who is 12 weeks. It has seemed to have hit him the last couple of weeks and he has regressed as well (the occasional wet pants etc).
