I thought I was doing the right thing having socket covers. Seems they actually cause more risks rather than reducing them. See here : www.fatallyflawed.org.uk.

I couldn't believe it.

I never used them either after reading this, my HV was horrified. It was the fact they are pointless rather than the fact they are dangerous, but CD's point 3 was the one which convinced me the most.

Basically the socket cover pushes aside the cover which is built into the socket. Most socket covers also have a small hole in them to help adults remove the socket cover.
Small children shove items up, through the hole in the socket cover and into the now exposed electrics in the socket itself.

So all the socket cover does is disable the built-in safety measures.

My DH is an electrical engineer and wouldn't let me buy socket covers.
