what age do you think is ok to sleep on the top bunk?

DS is six and still in a junior bed but we're about to do with a swap around with bedrooms.

His older step brother is going into the new room and wants a new double bed (he is 17 and about 6'3" so fair enough)

So he will vacate a highbed, i.e. up a stepladder with desk and futon under. DS really wants to sleep up there but I'm just so worried about him going wandering in the night and falling down, am I being really daft? (its not that he's ever sleep-walked or anything)

What age were you confident that yours could sleep up high?

Ds1 slept in a bunk bed from 5. No problems at all.

I think 6 would be ok, depending on his night habits really. Is he the type to be unsettled at night and wander around?

If he is I would trial him in the futon bed for a specific time to see if he can adjust to the new room without keep getting up.

DSD has been in a bunk since a few months before her 6th birthday with no issues. She does have a little lamp up there so that she can switch it on if she needs to climb down the ladder in the dark for any reason (she rarely does though).

My DS1 is 6 in November and he's been in a top bunk for about a month now - he's absolutely fine in it, no problems getting up and down at all and he knows not to muck about up there. He really loves it and finds it exciting in a way only a 5/6 year old can. Grin

dd2 is 6 and sleeps in the top bunk. She sleepwalks sometimes and manages the ladders no problem even in her sleep

I thought 6yo was the usual official guidance (see what Argos catalog says). DS has been okay in one from 5.5yo. To my surprise. He fell out of a cabin bed at 3am at about age 4.5yo.

ds got bunk beds for his 6th birthday (odd gift I know but he was desperate for friends to have sleep overs and there was no where to put them.) He has been on the top bunk since including during our rather violent earthquake which made the power go out, he managed to descend while the bunks were still rocking in pitch darkness so I now have no concerns with him in the bunks other than securing them to the wall in the event of another big earthquake.
