Cloth nappies- struggling with the smell of wee

Hi
My 1.5yr DD is in Tots bots during the week and itti bitti De'lish at the weekends.

I dry pail and wash every other day, every 3rd day at most (have schedule for washing in the week!)

But Im really struggling with the smell. The wee has manky smell- its not ammonia, standard wee smell- maybe its stale wee but its really getting to me and I dread opening nappy bucket to put in next one! Smell can be bad with one nappy in there less than 24hrs - no poo.

I am considering doing a strip wash soon anyway as I've not done one and had them for nearly a year.

Are there any other tips for the smell thing.... Is it normal as child gets older?

There was never a smell when I was just breastfeeding her. All started when weaning started.

thanks!

Sounds like I have a similar wash schedule to you :)

I put a few drops of tea tree and lavender oil in the bucket every time I empty it which seems to help. The smell does seem to have got worse as DD has been weaned - probably because there's just more waste.

Thanks Running Monkey :)

Will try the lavender oil immediately. Thanks

when mine were toddlers it was rank. I used to use some napisan in the wash and occasionally wash at 60 degrees - always did an extra rinse and I always but the powder in the drum for all washes to stop with pipes getting clogged with powder of the months.

It did help.

thanks Cargirl

I always use napisan plus no bio powder- but only a tiny bit.

I'd do a 60 wash and extra rinse cycle with lavendar oil in the conditioner drawer then.

I put tea tree oil in mine. I dont have the problem now with DD2 but before DD1 was potty trained she was the same, really smells!! I strip washed more regularly and kept adding tea tree to the bucket, i also washed the bucket every time i washed the nappies and sprinkled with tea tree oil. Also try some white vinegar and a bit of bicarb in the wash that may do the trick.
