Have you tried this , or this , or this , or this ? I couldn't compare them with the price you have been quoted without knowing your return date, so they may be no good, but one of them was advertising a standard (whatever that is) return in August for less than £200.

try the hovercraft, I found Dover - Calais at £158, online i think it is even less.

Have you checked any offers in newspapers or magazines. We booked a Dover-Clais ferry for October half term for £99, using a voucher from The Times last month. I know this voucher was to cover the summer too - might be worth a quick check when you pass a newsagents. Saved us loads - our quote before it was nearly £300.

Have you tried playing aropund with the times of your journey? We found that the times you choose have a HUGE effect on the cost. Journeys earlier in the day for OUT bound was cheaper for us.

Have you tried ferry.co.uk ? Pretty good prices - easily the cheapest for the mid September crossings we wanted - but for some reason known only unto themselves (I think because it's P&O's bucket shop and they dopn't want to offer these fares to business travellers/travel agents) it's only online in the evenings.

how do people get cheap fares to go over and fetch booze then? I thought you could get a crossing alot cheaper than this. Just wondering that all

You can get some really really cheap day trip prices, especially if you travel at off peak times during the day. I think P&O had some at £9 return for a day.
