Devan - 4yr old, 12 weeks to live, YOU could save him esp if you are Asian/Euro mix

An old school friend's 4 year old boy has a rare form of high risk leukaemia.

He has less than 12 weeks to find a bone marrow or cord blood match, so he can have a life-saving transplant.

Anyone could be the match, but they are especially interested in individuals who are of mixed Asian/European ancestry, like Devan.

Donation itself is very easy these days - similar to donating blood. But first you need to be tissue-typed to see if you're a match. For this, you will need to have a sample of your saliva or a swab of your cheek sent for testing.

Register with Anthony Nolan Trust www.anthonynolan.org.uk and they will send you a kit.

Follow the instructions and return it immediately to the registry. It's that simple. You will be contacted immediately if you match with Devan (or someone else waiting).

Men make the best donors so ladies, please ask your partners to register as well.
Thank You!! More info about Devan at www.matchdevan.com

Done

Good wishes to Devan

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 14/05/2010 16:26

I would do it if I was the right kind of ethnic mix but a bump for you anyway.

mummyrex · 14/05/2010 16:34

Hi Fab

ANYONE could be a match, it is just more likely if you have a similar ethnic make-up.

PLUS Devan is not the only child or young person looking for a match and you could be a match for someone else

I am the right mix so will register straight away.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 14/05/2010 16:40

Okay. Are there any restrictions on who can be a donor. I wasn't allowed to be a blood donor for a while. I will also have to talk to DH as last time I talked to him about doing this he wasn't keen.

Avad · 14/05/2010 16:41

Saw this today on Cake Wrecks FB group. Am already registered but am sending it round anyway

mummyrex · 14/05/2010 16:46

Have asked this on your other thread, but what does donating bone marrow entail?

Exogenesis · 14/05/2010 16:49

Unfortunatly I am unable to

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 14/05/2010 16:49

I really hope a match is found, I'm already registerd with AN trust. Registering really is easy.

WorzselMummage · 14/05/2010 16:51

I have sent off for the kit.

I have thus far been unable to donate blood as my blood count is never high enough. Will that matter ?

mummyrex · 14/05/2010 16:56

Sorry Worzel, I don't know. I DO know that MEN make better donors for various reasons so if anyone can persuade their partners to register even if they can't that would be really great!

OP posts:
DilysPrice · 14/05/2010 16:56

And please try to poke your DP/DH (or indeed brothers/BILs) because male donors are generally preferable (more marrow=better results).

WorzselMummage · 14/05/2010 17:03

I cant even persuade my DP to go on the organ donor register i think it highly unlikely i'd be able to part with anything while he's alive.

I will try though

WorzselMummage · 14/05/2010 17:04

that made no sense did it...

you know what i mean though

Avad · 14/05/2010 19:28

BettySuarez · 16/05/2010 12:46

I don't meet the criteria either (I have dodgy blood ) but will pass this on to everyone that I know.

I had no idea that it was so easy to register.

Did someone mention a Facebook Group? If so, I can forward this on to everyone that I know.

mummyrex · 16/05/2010 12:57

Thanks Betty! Yes it really is easy and WOW, how feel good could it be to save someone's life!
