Where shall I move to in the UK?

Hi. to cut a LONG story short I will be completing my degree herre in ireland next year. Dh is employed but his company have let over half its workforce go over the last year and the company is on the verge of collapse. I have been thinking seriously about moving to the UK in the next couple of years. I was born in London but moved here when I was 7.
I don't know the UK well at all and am looking for some opinions on where would be a nice area to move to. We have 2 kids ages 3 and 7 (so prob 5 and 9 when we move).

So would anyone like to suggest an area to me? We'd like somewhere reasonably quiet but communiting distance from larger towns for work etc. Nice schools for the kids, friendly area, don't mind too much after that. We'd be renting a house so reasonably priced rent would also be an advantage!

Sorry that should obviously be commuting distance

Without knowing (roughly) what sort of skills you/DH have/will have, for employment, it's a bit awkward.

Have you considered any of the UK websites for searching for rental properties that you'd consider within budget (again, awkward, but that's perhaps a place to start, one region at a time, to see if some are just out of the question, IYSWIM).

So many contrasts, north to south and I think there are probably more from south of Birmingham on MN than north (just a 'guess') but that makes for either leafy home counties (perhaps unaffordable) or maybe closer to urban areas than you are after.

East and west too, east is definitely drier and a bit colder than the western side of the UK.

I'd say, Don't come. Once you see what state this poor country is in you'll soon be heading back home...or elsewhere!

Oooooh, and in some areas much flatter, too, Runforfun

Probably best to get a job first, and then work from there...

When I move back to the UK it will be to Scotland.

But that's just my personal preference. Haven't managed to narrow it down much more than that though (and Scotland is a big place).

As everyone else says, think about where your jobs are likely to be first.
