Did anyone use old underpants in the 70's as dusters

This came up in conversation today and the other mums laughed at me as I thought we all used clean old underpants (mostly my Dad's) in the 70's to do dusting. Please let me know if I am "normal"

Yes!

And Dad's old vests cut up too.

we still do in this house...and shirts, vests, old tea towels.
And BIL takes our old socks for polishing his motorbikes.

I didn't then as I was too young but I do now occasionally use a clean , but tatty pair of DDs knickers if I've run out of cloths

I completely forgot about the vests too. Thanks for reminding me. Yes I am normal!!!

My cleaning lady was and insists on proper yellow dusters though.

My Grandad did (not just in the 70s but for decades prior, and in the 80s too)

tbh by the time I am ready to dispose of pants they have had it and are fit only for the bin.

My Mum's vests got used.

my mum still has some of my terry nappies as dust rags. and my 3 siblings wore them before that as well

never used old underpants but pretty much anything else i cn put my hands on: old T-shirts, old towels, even socks ( very good way to get rid or the pile of single socks).very practical as well as you can wea them like gloves.

I do it now . Agree - socks are excellent dusters - especially for the banisters!

you can read the version with less typos if you wish

We use both the DCs old vests and babygros, cut up, as rags. I use the old muslin squares for cooking, eg marmalade making etc

DH cuts up his old shirts and uses them as rags in the shed. Not sure what for, don't start me on the shed.....

Booboobedoo · 18/03/2010 20:54

We do too.

Knickers are excellent for shoe-polishing.

PlanetEarth · 18/03/2010 21:13

Yeah, we used old underpants, usually my Grandma's I think. I hated it, it always seemed gross, even though they'd been washed hundreds of times.

Now I have my own house, I can't understand why anyone would do this. Dusters last for ever, and if you really want to use your clothes instead of buying dusters, why not t-shirts or something rather than knickers ?
