Both DSs had mid height loft beds from about 2y 8m. They're great as the rails are higher than the mattress making it difficult to fall out. Only DS2 has managed to fall out of his on one occasion and we think he tried to climb over the edge rather than down the ladder. DS1 has never fallen out of his in 4 years.

Depends if you need a bed with storage/playspace underneath - it was essential for DS2s room.

hideaway bed (M&S do great ones) .. just pull out bottom bed so if he falls out he falls on that .. and then you never need to buy another bed .. ever

ikea do one like that as well v.cheap. just bought ds1 20mths first proper bed from ikea 60.00 bargain. it has legs which we have left off so only about 1ft off the floor. we'll probably put the legs on once hes used to it so we can get some of those under bed containers for his toys and fir a bed guard or something.

We have Flexa beds for our kids - you can add rails, various height legs , ladders, bunks, guest beds and so on as your child develops. Not cheap in UK though , around £400 for mid height set up.

Another vote for flexa. The sluglet's is currently half height, (Room for a play room underneath but not furniture) and we intend to lift it up to bunk height when she gets older.
