I think it's about 18 mths

from the GRO website

Certificate ordering service

Welcome to the General Register Office for England and Wales online ordering service

The General Register Office holds a central copy of all registrations for England and Wales. Local Register Offices also hold records of events registered in their area.

For recent events registered within the last 18 months, applications for certificates should be made to the Register Office in the district where the birth, death or marriage took place

So that means I would have to wait for 18 months before finding out if someone had died and if I had no idea I would have to keep applying?

get copy of local paper and check obits? Call local undertakers? call a friend or family member or go to area and knock on neighbours door? (although I assume if you could do that one, you would already, so must be some reason you can't ask anyone, or perhaps no-one to ask?)

Just seen your post Heqet. Thanks for answering. Still haven't decided what if anything to do.
