Flat Screens - am I the only person who doesn't have one yet?

Our huge, ancient telly is loosing its colour and I think it might be finally on its way out Am I the only person who doesn't have one of these new ones yet? What's the best type to buy? How much can you get one for? Are they worth the money or is it better to just go and get another big, second hand one? Advice much appreciated - we dont wsnt to miss out on the Chrimbo telly!

Nope, I don't have one either, and not a clue about which sort to buy

RubberDuck · 22/12/2009 11:36

No, and our huge, ancient telly is nowhere near on its way out, despite encouragement from youngest son switching it on and off repeatedly. It's very annoying.

squilly · 22/12/2009 11:38

I don't have one and wouldn't know where to start. We've said we'll get a little flatscreen when we need to but I don't think we'll ever go nuclear and buy a big brute.

Sorry I can't help with any advice, but I'll keep checking back on this thread, so I can see what advice you get. It might help us later.

MmeherewegoawassailLindt · 22/12/2009 11:39

We don't have one as our old TV is still working and I am too mean sensible to buy a new one until it does.

Do you think it would last until after Xmas? I think that you generally get the best deals afterwards.

lentildiva · 22/12/2009 11:45

Our one is always being turned off and on by the kids. Often by the mains AND its near a radiator so I think that may have done it some damage!

Nope I don't have one either, have a big old tv someone gave me when I moved that I was over the moon with, and will be using til it packs up on me.

VAT back up in new year so best bet is to buy between now and new year so you get something on offer as well as VAT free. Not sure about technical advice bt I'm sure someone on here will know.

If you have toddlers don't do what my friend did, buy a whopping big huge lcd flat screen then same day your ds draws on it with his baby bel cheese!

Carikube · 22/12/2009 11:49

We don't have one either. DH would dearly love to get one but doesn't feel he can justify it as our old tank still works brilliantly. But then he also wants a 3-D TV (we saw one at a Philips exhibition and he fell in love with it) so we might just wait until that comes out

Dlamis · 22/12/2009 11:51

We don't have one either. Still got our big old cathode ray tube monster. Colours going a bit dodgy in one corner but until it conks out completely won't change it. We had it fixed about 4 years ago and the repair man said (ihho) that cathode ray tellys were much better than the new ones and to hang on to it as long as possible.

RubberDuck · 22/12/2009 11:54

Ours is near a radiator too, but we've had it now for about 13 years and it's still going strong.

Sigh.

LadyBlaBlah · 22/12/2009 11:54

No I don't have one either. I dread the day I have to be presented in an electrical shop to be robbed of my hard earned cash for a telly that sounds funny and makes everyone look fat.

RubberDuck · 22/12/2009 11:56

(I mainly want one, cos I covet an Xbox and currently we don't have enough of the right sockets on the back, apparently! Damn cathode ray tube reliability!)

lentildiva · 22/12/2009 13:24

LOL at drawing with baby bell

Ooh we just got a new flat screen this weekend. I wish i'd got one sooner now. I was scared of them before.

You can get iplayer on them via the Wii, put your camera card in the back and view your holiday pictures, and loads of other amazing tricks.

Go get one.

moaningminniewhingesagain · 22/12/2009 13:29

No flat screen here either, mines only a 24 in ex display bog standard 8 yr old tv.

DH been mithering me for one for aaagggeees though. It's not that we can't afford one, I'm just not interested, and I do all the shopping round here.

Will probably wait til the DCs break this one, which shouldn't be long

And the thought of Sky Sports one a huge screen in my living room is just so depressing.

NativityApple · 22/12/2009 13:29

didn't know about the evils of telly / radio proximity.. mine is a 1989 vintage left to me by my Gran

screen's gone a bit blue though and DP has an irrational hatred of flat screens so is looking for another old-fashioned one to replace it with.

NativityApple · 22/12/2009 13:31

that was meant to read telly / radiator proximity, I'm sure tellies and radios get on just fine

bruffin · 22/12/2009 13:38

We don't and are not going to replace ours until it breaks down again. It's a 8 or 9 yr old Loewe and the picture is still excellent but it has been repaired twice and we have said no more.
Dp was eyeing up the LED ones in currys on sunday and I must admit the picture on those were lovely, glad we missed out the plasma/lcd tvs in between.

Curlygirly · 22/12/2009 13:40

we don't have one either and won't be getting one til this one dies.

Last year ds1 put 2 very strong magnets on the screen and found he could distort the picture. I was secretly pleased but eventually it righted itself. Boo!

lentildiva · 23/12/2009 00:41

Went to a TV shop this afternoon and saw the most amazing TV. As big as a wall, crystal clear, shame it costs about £2,500!!! Are there really people who buy TV's like that??? Good news is that fiddling around with the almost-as-ancient freeview box seems to have fixed the colour flickering problem. May be more life in it yet. Kind of disapointed now. Really like the look of these flat screens.

I dream of flat screen TV's, oh and a new sofa mine is like sitting on solid wood.

Mamazontopofsantabeingrude · 23/12/2009 00:46

ive got my mums old tv. Its not a very big screen but the tv itself is huge.

but i t works and i have neither the money nor inclination to replace it until i have to

serenity · 23/12/2009 01:01

We only have one because I won one in a competition 7 years ago. and once your used to it it's hard to go back. The original was lovely, but quite wee so when we got a PS3 a couple of years ago I bought a considerable larger HD one to go with it (interest free off the catalogue) The picture's lovely, but more than that it's all the space that it frees up, and it's comparatively light so we don't need a big stand.

I like the look of the LED ones, but I think we'll stick with this one for a good few years yet!

YanknChristmasCrackers · 23/12/2009 01:58

i dont have one, waiting till current one dies.

CupOChristmasCheerfulYank · 23/12/2009 02:05
