Listening to the radio

I wonder if anyone can help me with a little research.

Dh and I are about to start a new business aimed at children (6 - 16 years). We were thinking of advertising on the local commercial radio as well as the newspapers.

What I need to know is when (if at all) you listen to the radio and what sort of stations. I listen myself in the car either on the way to work or on the way to toddler/NCT groups.

Also those of you with older children when do they listen? Obviously drive time advertising is more expensive but I have a feeling that
kids probably listen more at weekends (although its hard to remember what I did as a child it seems so long ago!)

I know this won't be a definitive guide but it might give me an idea as to how best to spend my money.

Oh, and for those of you who may be concerned I am going to be marketing a dodgy product to children its an educational out of school activity we are setting up.

Many Thanks

We (me and 16m ds) listen to the local radio while we have breakfast, and while we get ready in the morning. If I'm not working we listen to it over lunch as well.

GeorginaA · 16/05/2003 13:25

I listen to Heart 106.2 in the mornings - about 6.30 to 9ish depending on how organised I am about getting breakfast over with and tidying up!

ScummyMummy · 16/05/2003 13:31

I like radio 4 and XFM. The adverts on XFM are rubbish though!

SamboM · 16/05/2003 13:33

R4 in the mornings
R5 in the afternoons
Virgin (aka radio coldplay as it's all they play) in the evenings

Bobsmum · 16/05/2003 13:50

XFm or radio 1 - no ads there though

winnie1 · 16/05/2003 14:46

RAdio 4, radio 4, radio 4 and occassionally radio 3... Hate, hate, hate anything with adverts and dh listens to talk sport.

tallulah · 16/05/2003 17:52

Used to listen to local radio on the way to work. Given up because I'm sick of their inane chatter ("aren't we zany, now we're going to say this funny phrase" ...boring) , & defected to Radio 2. I don't mind adverts, actually, but I do expect to hear music on my radio

Nutjob · 16/05/2003 17:58

I listen to Captial, Capital Gold, XFM and our local radio station. Oh and occasionally Virgin fm

Local radio between waking up and going to work (that's sometime between 5.45 and 7 depending upon which office I have to go to that day), then if I'm going in by car radio 4 or 5 on the way to work (in which case usually 7-8 am), and on the way home (an hour starting anytime between 4.30 and 10!). Weekends mostly radio 4. For music I listen to a Canadian station called Silk fm via the net if I'm working on the PC at home - but although it's a commercial station I don't think it would be much use to you for advertising!

Only listen very occassionally due to children!

jac34 · 16/05/2003 20:20

Never really listen to local radio, it really irritates me, all the adverts !!!
I'm a radio 2 listener, mornings at home and all day when at work, absolutely love it, always have even when I was in my early 20's.
Yes, I am a really sad person !!

Looks like the consensus is save your money!

Do you get Primary Times round your way? Might be worth looking at that - free mag distributed in Primary Schools, has ads, editorial and advertorials. The website is

www.primarytimes.net/

so you can see what kind of editorial stuff it includes and if it's in your area. (No ads on the website but they would probably send you a copy if you haven't seen it.)

I listen to 1007.7 Heart fm. Always listen to the breakfast show and late night show. It depends on what I am doing the rest of the day, sometinmes listen at lunchtime. We are a radio in dd's room so it is on when change her also if she wakes in te night I put it on whilst feeding.

steppemum · 17/05/2003 05:40

I'm a radio 4 addict (when I'm in the UK) I have it on in every room, so I can move around without missing any bits. It drives my Mum mad. I used to be a big radio 1 fan. I hate local radio and never listen to it. I can't stand the ads. Sorry!

Clarinet60 · 17/05/2003 09:52

radio4 mostly. Radio2 occasionally, & local radio.

XAusted · 17/05/2003 10:37

Listen to radio lots because I don't watch TV. Don't like commercial radio tho' - far too many ads. I switch between Radio 2 and Radio 4. Local bbc radio is boring and local commercial radio rubbish (IMHO!). Am listening to Jonathan Ross as I type.

NQWWW · 19/05/2003 12:39

Only ever listen to Radio 4, and recently Classic FM (following prufrock's advice after my post on being a classical music dunce!)
