Brownies and Guides - did you? Will your daughters?

Just watched 100 years of guiding - full of nostalgia for my years in uniform!!!

What impact do you think being a guide had on you? And will you recommend it to your daughters?

I had a brilliant time - best of all was the camping! I remember how my friends and I really challenged ourselves and had great fun - with some naughty bits inbetween!!! Looking back, the leaders took some risks and really let us be very independent.

We went on one camp where we convinced ourselves we could see ghosts in a mansion at night, we got hopelessly lost thousands of times and were really horrid to some of the leaders (sorry Aunty Meg....but if only you hadn't sat on a chair with your legs apart when we were in our fairy ring).

I'd love my little girl to do it! Have to wait another 5 years though.

I did Brownies and Guides. Signed the dc up for Beavers and dd was OK with it, but went and signed herself up for Brownies (!) and loves it so much more! Does depend on the pack and personality of your dd.

Has anyone got any pictures of the brown beret which came before the bobble hat (or am I just hallucinating about that?)

JackieNo · 19/08/2009 11:27

Beret on the girl on the left.

I was a brownie, guide, young leader and assistant guider. My mum was a brownie, guide, sea ranger, and Brown Owl.

Am quite sad that as I have a DS he will have to be a beaver etc.

The worst bit of the old uniforms was the stupid young leader/ranger forage cap that never stayed on. The uniforms I wore did wear very well and were passed on for years

Thanks Jackie, that's how I remember it!

I was never a brownie or a guide, I really wanted to be, but wasn't allowed and then went off to boarding school anyway.

DD's name is down for Rainbows. She's 5. A couple of her friends already go and really enjoy it.

My daughter loved Brownies. My only gripe was that they spent too much time indoors with them: the hall backed on to an enormous village green. They spend enough time sitting still at school. But to be fair, the Brown Owl was nearing retirement and was probably just worn out.
