I've learned that if you eat a food item that is harder to digest, it ends up lower in calories than a piece of food which is soft and malleable.

For example.

Flapjack (hard)
Advertised calories: 200
Actual digested calories (non-scientific guess): 180

Chocolate Brownie (soft, yielding, chocolatey flesh...)
Advertised calories: 200
Actual digested calories (non-scientific): 200. Or is that 210? Hmm...I need to get back to the article and check my facts...

Anyway, that's all roughly true. Don't ask me why. Ask the New Scientist.

I learned how to make honeycomb just like the middle of a crunchie bar!

Not a good thing to learn because it is delicious and soon gets scoffed!

Mintyy · 03/08/2009 22:51

I have learned that it is a good idea, when camping, to leave your clothes in a suitcase in the back of the car!

Why didn't anyone tell me this before?

Mintyy · 03/08/2009 22:51

Please provide honeycomb recipe Tortoise .

Tortoise · 03/08/2009 22:56

Are you sure Minty?

OK Honeycomb recipe-
A square baking tin 18cm
A little butter to grease tin
5 tablespoons caster sugar
2 tablespoons golden syrup
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda.

1.Grease tin! Put the sugar and syrup into a saucepan over a medium heat. Bring the mixture to the boil, then let it simmer for 3-4 mins until it becomes golden brown.

  1. Take the pan off the heat, add the bicarb and mix in with a wooden spoon. When the mixture froths up, pour it into the baking tin right away.
  1. When the mixture has cooled, turn it out onto a chopping board and break into bite size pieces.
  1. You can dip pieces into melted choc if you like! Leave to set on grease proof paper.

ENJOY

Mintyy · 03/08/2009 22:58

Oh dear, that looks horribly easy .

Tortoise · 03/08/2009 23:01

It is very very very easy which is a terrible thing!

dizzymare · 03/08/2009 23:13

That a hummingbird isn't as heavy as a 1pence piece

paranoidmother · 03/08/2009 23:27

I've learnt that:

  1. After losing 1 stone the rest isn't easy
  2. Suncream doesn't come off the inside or outside of the car easily
  3. My DC's only play nicely when I don't say ' You're playing/sharing very nicely'
  4. No matter how fast I read, I am never going to get to the bottom of the pile of books by my bed without adding more
  5. I shouldn't eat in bed - too many crumbs
  6. I should go to bed earlier so that I don't feel like rubbish in the morning
  7. My mother is worse than a child when it comes to cleaning/tidying/hogging the bathroom etc

I've learned that a home-made Thomas TTT potty training chart (with DS's face on train) is an incredibly way to motivate him to do all his weeks (almost!) in the potty. Bless!

Geocentric · 03/08/2009 23:37

I've learnt:

  • that instead of my DCs starting school today they have two more weeks because of swine flu
  • that my extended family, though sweet, can never entirely be relied upon
  • that the sun does eventually shine after a week and a half of rain
  • that my 5yo has learnt a new word: crap (NOT from me - bloody Cartoon Network!!)
BigGobMum · 03/08/2009 23:54

Tortoise - is this the same as cinder toffee? (I know what I will be doing tomorrow now!)

MrsMerryHenry · 04/08/2009 00:02

Congrats to Leningrad!

I have learned that I am much fatter than I thought since I saw a photo of me on facebook [evil thing], and that this is unlikely to improve since seeing that blardy recipe

I learnt that

  • my 7mo is 13kg
  • if your baby is 13kg at 7 months, it's really hard to get a suitable car seat and impossible for under £200
beansmum · 04/08/2009 02:46

I have learned

  1. sections 4 and 6 of the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990. Yay!

2)section 5 of the Interpretation Act 1999. Yay again, so much fun!

3)that ordinary timtams are rubbish when you are used to the double coat ones. 3 cups of tea had to be abandoned yesterday with biscuits in the bottom.

Tortoise · 04/08/2009 08:19

BigGobMum I don't know, haven't heard of cinder toffee.

I have also learnt that putting that recipe on MN may get me in a whole heap of trouble from MNers!
