what sort of food do I do for a party from 7pm onwards?

about 40 people

do I just do masses of delicious canapes type things

or proper food

dh wants to cook rib of beef, ham ,salmon etc

I always think it's too awkward to eat proper food standing up but I feel we should provide a decent nosh up as 7 is quite early

well I was thinking lining stomachs but dh thinkks at thst time they will not have eaten yet??
