Who pays the babysitter when you have been out?

I ask this because anytime DH and I are out, and we both come home "tipsy". I have to pay the babysitter, who just happens to work at the nursery our children go to. (Imagine what they must say?!!) My DH either pretends paying the taxi driver takes ages, or goes to the bathroom, or just walks into the house and goes to bed. So I have to pretend I am sober and make small talk. (Rather like those evenings as a teenager talking to my parents - ie Hi I only had one glass of wine).

Does anyone else suffer the indignity that I do? As I come from Ireland it must just be me!

I don't get it. What's the indignity? I'm being extra-specially thick (drunk) tonight!

What's the issue!!! I don't understand???? Help me pleeeease.

Is it who's bank account the money comes out of? Or is it facing the babysitter and trying to be sensible when you're drunk???

gosh2 · 08/05/2003 21:47

OH for goodness sake!! It's not the cash, it's the booze

AH I seeeeee. Can you tell I'm drunk tonight??

WHy don't YOU hide in the taxi the next time! Or maybe you'd both end up sitting in the taxi..... the taxi driver lookin at you kind of strangely!!

Absolutely hillarious!

Then the babysitter would see, and will definately tell all of the nursery.

But, yes you are right, I must hide first next time!

NIght out? Babysitter? What's that?

Jimjams · 08/05/2003 22:19

i have to come in and talk to my parents sensibly as they're the only people who babysit for us!

doormat · 08/05/2003 22:30

Most of the time my 17 yo babysits for us but when she has gone out aswell we pay our babysitter before we leave. It is less embarrassing and then the only thing we have to worry about is making sure the babysitter gets home safely. Either dp or I (mostly dp)walk him home to the top of our street. Or if they live furthur we pay for cab home.

Well I can't talk, last time we had a babysitter, I ended up lying on the kitchen floor laughing my head off!!

Fortuneatly this is also our nanny, so she knows what I am like. Also luckily my dh doesn't really drink, so it is always him who can behave when we get home.

SamboM · 09/05/2003 09:59

Whoever is still standing pays the babysitter in our house!

SamboM · 09/05/2003 10:00

Ps it has been known that we have had to call her the next morning and ask if we paid her - luckily she is v honest!

As an ex-babysitter, I can assure you that tipsy parents pretending to be sober were the highlight of my evenings.

I haven't used a paid sitter yet, just friends, but coming home to them when you are later than you said is like coming home to your mum. It's pants.

SamboM · 09/05/2003 11:07

simple answer to that, don't say what time you'll be home (always worked with my mum!) Though she did once hit me on the head with a poker when I was breaking in at 4am having forgotten my keys (really!)
