  1. Last fags all round, then up against the wall with the lot of 'em. bang bang bang bang. etc etc

  2. Keep em, god love em, they're good for the tourists and keep Britain great

  3. Too boring to waste time thinking about

I think I'll be bloodthirsty and go with 1 tonight. Though 3 is my usual postion.

I go for number 2 .... have always been a fan of royalty. Britain's heritage and history ... we have something unique in Britain (or at least you do, now that I don't live there any more!!)
that other countries do not have ...
My least favourite royal is the Queen herself ... she is too distant ... but I think Prince Charles has done many good things in his life time ... he makes an effort to CARE about things ... The Prince's Trust for example ... and his thoughts on the environment etc.
Obviously I fancy Prince William but that doesn't cloud my judgement I think with the mix of his father and mother in him he could be a great ambassador for England ... should he choose to be.
Might think of other things to add later!

Ghosty · 08/05/2003 03:55

I should say 'Britain' not 'England' so as not to offend our Scottish, Welsh and Irish Mumsnetters ... sorry

mmm · 08/05/2003 07:22

I'm with you, Scrummy.

WideWebWitch · 08/05/2003 08:24

Scummy, what a lovely present for first thing on a Thursday morning
What about d) Shooting's too good for 'em, lazy load of scroungers...send 'em to live in the real world and see if they make it. You could televise it too...

I like the idea of a monarchy but not in its present form. The Queen, Charles and William should receive an income off the state as they are ambassadors for Great Britain. The other royals are just "titled hangers on".

My opinion over William has changed over the last couple of years. As far as I am concerned he is an "ungrateful little whatever".He has done nothing for the youth of this empire. They need someone to look up to. Sure he needs his privacy but he also has a responsibility and duty as heir to the throne to get to know the views and ideals of the public he will one day is destined to represent. Tax payers money is spent on his comfortable lifestyle and top schooling for what. We should all call him "Greta" as his immortal words are "I want to be left alone".Fine lets leave you alone "Greta" you spoilt little sod. While we are at it lets remove your income, titles and luxurious lifestyle.

IMO the monarchy should stop at Charles' reign. Camilla or not. I will upset pro-diana's here but as we all know she was nothing but a "womb" to bear heirs. But Charles and Camilla obviously have a deep love for eachother. She should not become queen though only the likes of a consort.

Good recovery Ghosty!!!

Tinker · 08/05/2003 09:24

Prefer the guillotine myself

The tourism argument - France got rid of theirs, is intensely proud of having got rid of them, has (I think) more tourists than us - though maybe not from the USA at the moment! - and people still flock to see the old royal palaces - mostly to gasp in horror at the obscene ostentatious wealth. Holland and Belgium, whilst being lovely underrated countries, do not, I think, have the same influx of tourists and they have a monarchy, albeit a more conservative one.

i really havent got an opinion on your monarchy i dont see what good they do for the country,a lot of people objects to the monarchy in spain but at least our king stopped what could have been another civil war when we had a coup detat,i also think your press has done the royals a lot of damage and theyre now more like a circus

nerdgirl · 08/05/2003 10:21

Ghosty, shouldn't you say 'United Kingdom' and not 'Britain' to include Northern Ireland?

Just stirring it!! Couldn't resist!

Being Irish myself, I have to say I find your royal family very entertaining. What would the tabloids do without them?

slug · 08/05/2003 13:24

Brilliant WWW! The ultimate "I'm royality get me out of here" Imagine the blurb in the TV guide:

LAUGH as you watch Prince Charles hold his own d**k as he gives a urine sample!

SNIGGER as the queen attempts to put up with the drunks on London Underground!

SNEER as Sophie Wessex argues with the housing benefit office!

sis · 08/05/2003 13:32

Yep, I'm for option D from WWW, we could get loads of money with world rights on the TV show, computer/playstation etc games ...

eefs · 08/05/2003 13:35

........but nerdgirl, does Northern Ireland want to be included?

(ducks head below parapet)

And the chipolatas!
Didn't Sue Townsend write a book about the whole Royal Family having to suddenly move to a council house in Coventry and live like the rest of us? Celebrity Palace Swap...
I think the whole institution needs change but I do feel a bit sorry for them as individual human beings, I have to say. I don't think any of them are all that bright, and they are surrounded by people who cocoon them from reality and tell them just what they want to hear (and line their own pockets lavishly in the process). It would take exceptional strength of character to shrug off all that weight of expectation and tradition and make real changes in the monarchy from within its confines, don't you think?
Maybe it will all fizzle out naturally if William continues to claim he does not want to be king.
Tinker, France does have chateaux and a republic but it also has proper food and weather...

Tinker · 08/05/2003 14:07

Batters, I read that too! And the Queen Mother had never opened her own curtains and wouldn't have known how to! Strange the things that stick in your mind isn't it? Well, we do all seem to be spectacularly agreeing here, except Ks (or whatever you're called now, sorry, couldn't think of anything witty for you), who disagrees with herself. Ah well. I'd love to see 'I'm a Royal Get me out of here' too Slug

Marina · 08/05/2003 14:19

Yikes Batters, I thought (and I feel I was not alone) that it was the royal wee-wee that was held - it never before occurred to me it might be the BOTTLE! Oh dear, must get back to drafting maternity cover job descriptions..

Rhubarb · 08/05/2003 15:30
