i found that a soloution of bicarbinate of soda in hot water usually does the trick.

yep, bicarb is fab. Make a paste, rub it in with cloth, leave to dry, hoover out, it is quite magical.

I used febreeze, but needed to apply it several times over a few days before the smell left! So next time (hopefully never), I'll give bicarb a go. Much easier on the pocket too!

You could try it, rickman - see if your carpet rises! - I don't think it would do any harm and it might work.

1 part white vinegar to 4 parts warm water on the stain.
