Anyone know anything about working as a public health analyst / epidemiologist?

Something I'd love to do but am not Working in a vaguely related area - enough to talk about certain areas but not really related iyswim.
Would I need a PhD (I don't have one and don't think I could manage one at the moment) but would love to get into this area. Are there any analyst / manager jobs out there? What sort of things would they look for?

I am in an epidemiology department with major university. We employ a range of professionals - lots of statisticians, quite a lot of medically qualified people, some science grads. Depends what exactly you want to do. Very few people working under the title of "epidemiologist" - those tend to be professorial level.

Well, I have recently done a module of a masters course which I really enjoyed, and am going to ask about how long I've got to do the other modules to convert that into a PgC, PgDip and then a masters.
janinlondon - my ideal would be as an analyst - couldn't do the medical or research stuff anyway. I used epidemiologist as a kind of umbrella term for that sort of thing. My ideal job would be analysing data around the health of the local population and making recommendations for services and local policies. I'd love to use statistics in my work. I'm currently employed by the NHS and would love to either work for or closely with them. Part of the problem is (same for anyone I suppose) I couldn't get my current salary if I wanted a career change, I don't think
