Would you go on a plane when you have just found out you are pregnant?

Have just found out that I am pregnant and we have booked a holiday for next week. The flight is only a bit more than one hour, I don't want to cancel the holiday but am a bit worried about going on a plane. I have done it with ds1, which seemed fine at the time....Any thoughts?

I did it myself last year at about 6 weeks pregnant...am now 35 weeks pregnant and things seem to be ok.

well....i actually found out i was pg with dd while on holiday in malia, crete. so i didnt have a choice lol, i had to fly home.

it will be fine, dont worry

enjoy your holiday and don't worry - safest form of transport, so less of an issue in risk terms than driving to work!

You don't need to worry unless you are in the last trimester, and even then just if you were in a long haul flight you would need to consider using those special socks, but for an hour? It's the same as jumping into a car and drive to the next town.

Was 4 months pg when I flew back from Zimbabwe to the UK - 2hr flight to Jo'burg, 10hr flight to zurich and then another 1hr or so to London

i found out i was pg second time the day we got back from the caribbean, so an 8 hour flight each way.

I flew on business throughout my pregnancy.....felt really really travel sick but then I was sick everyday anyway. Other than that I and baby were fine.

Hi I'm 11 weeks and just come back from a fab holiday in Mallorca and was fine on the plane. Altho I don't particulary enjoy flying and often feel quite sick I bought a set of travel bands from boots and hardly felt sick at all despite quite a bumpy flight.

no you will be fine. i flew to the algarve when 16 weeks preg with ds2, makesur you drink plenty of fluids and walk around if flight is longer than an hour, its only usually after 28 weeks that airlinesdont like you flying.

its only a problem if you're about to give birth cos they don't want someone in labour on the plane

i flew london/johannesburg every 4th week whilst I was pregnant with number one - the last flight when i was 28 weeks

towards the end, the swelling of the feet was a bit horrid, and i was uncomfortable, but that was about it

I flew at 6 months, no problems. But a nurse seemed very concerned that I was doing it. Kept saying "You know what happens to crisp bags". Well, no, I don't so just did a weak smile.

I would worry about long haul flights later on in the pregnancy as you can get quite oxygen deprived. Same reason they dont let you go up the matterhorn on the train when you are visibly pregnant - not enough air.

I would go and enjoy myself.....this time next year you will have 2 children and an extra flight to pay for so have fun now!!

I would and did. We'd booked a holiday to the Caribbean and I found out I was pg just before we went. I was about 8 weeks pg when we went out I think. TBH., the flight was the only time I didn't suffer with morning sickness, for some odd reason.

why can't you fly when newly pregnant, I've never heard of it.

theres a good chance DD might have been conceived on a plane (no not in the way you think) but we did the deed the night before I left for a weekend and you know what they say you probably conceive sometime after the deed as the little blighters tend to hang around a while

You do get some radiation exposure from airplane flights, the amount is really really small... I think (offhand) you'd need to be on a plane about 5 hours to get the equivalent of a basic dental Xray. Air stewards may have very slightly higher rates of certain cancers than the rest of the population, but nothing has been observed among their babies (although women staff are also usually put on ground duties very early in their pregnancies in that industry).

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it.

I flew long-haul at 10 weeks and again at 6.5 months -- both times roundtrips US-Australia. Doctor had no problems with either flight (although he did object to a much shorter trip within California just before the Australia trip as my destination was surrounded by wildfire at the time).

Crisp bags inflate because they have air in them! As the nurse ought to have known perfectly well, there's no air in your uterus when you're pregnant. If you run it to that line again, look serene and say "Yes, but nothing at all happens to the orange juice."
