Hi,

Anybody know what a typing test for a job is like? I've been practicing on an internet typing tutor but I'm worried that I'll have to type from from dictaphone or a paper script. I'm not too bad, 40wpm, when I have it to copy on the screen but I drop right down to about 15wpm when I try to type something dp recites for me.

I have to leave for a 4hour journey soon and I have to get over 25wpm in this bloody exam. Please someone tell me it's the same as those typing tests online or mavis beacon.

cheers in advance

SC

No idea, just wanted to wish you luck

you will be fine.

Aw thanks

The worst thing about it is if I don't get the 25wpm I can't advance in the process. I have to go through 3hrs of tests and the last ten minutes is the typing test so I could do well and bust my ass for the whole thing and fall down at the end over bloody typing!...BUT that's the name of the game really isn't it - if your not in you can't win.

Must log off now and get moving. Thanks again.

Hi

I have had a couple of typing tests recently for job interviews.

Both involved copying from a printed sheet of A4 that was sitting at the side of the desk.

The first interview I knew in advance that the typing test was part of the interview process and I was prepared for it. The test was quite formal and the computer programme scored the results. (I didn't get the job but did get a phonecall with good feedbank and was told that I was the second choice for the post).

The second interview I did not know that there was going to be a typing test and to be honest I think they just added it that day to pad out the interview. They took a sheet from a pile on a spare desk and asked me to just copy it exactly the same including tables/charts/lines etc. The interviewer left me in the office with a couple of women who were working at their own desks...and she just told them to 'stop her in about five minutes and print off what she has done'!! (I didn't get this job but think that had more to do with my answers at the panel interview-they kept asking me questions about me being a single parent/childcare plans. I ended up quite on edge and agitated so not surprised that I didn't get that job!)

What I will suggest to you is that you try and practice on a PC rather than a laptop. I have a laptop at home and both the tests were carried out on a standard PC. I did take bad navigating with the mouse and making sure I was seeing the screen comfortably. (Adjusted the chair once and that will have taken up time in the testing).

Hope it goes well for you.

Just wondering how you got on...hope it went well and they let you know as soon as possible.

Thanks B1

I was gone by the time your message came through and didn't get back til late last night but thanks so much for your reply and for checking in to see how I got on. That second interview you had sounds awful!

Test didn't go well. I had to read from a script at the side and just couldn't get it together. I made a few mistakes and corrected them but everytime I did I lost concentration and got all disorientated. The test was only ten minutes so the end result was no errors but not many words and definately not 25wpm.

On the upside I still have my very boring job in my very boring office with my mindnumbingly boring boss so it's not all bad (gritted teeth )

Thanks all

That's a shame you think it did not go too well...although sometimes it is hard to gauge what exactly they are looking for...you might surprise yourself.
