reaction to pine nuts......four days so far of the vile bitter taste in my mouth

just wondered if anyone else has experienced this disgusting side effect?
I ate several pine nuts straight from the packet earlier this week. They tasted fine and I forgot I had eaten them.
Every day since, I have had the most disgusting bitter taste on my tongue which becomes more concentrated if I eat or drink anything. It is like the bitter stuff you put on your nails to prevent you biting them!
I came home last night from a week away and googled "bitter taste on tongue" and saw that pine nuts can cause this phenonemon.
I've never heard of this befor and wondered if anyone else has been through this? How long did it last?

I've never had this but when I was at uni a student ended up in hospital from eating so much pesto that his bile duct got blocked. I have avoided pesto ever since!

It's a side-affect of the potassium in pine nuts.

It's perfectly normal. They are good for you, but if you can't live with the taste, then go with bananas instead.

This is by no means normal.I wouldn't subject anyone to this awful bitter taste that continues to activate with the tiniest sip of a drink or morsal of food.
I ate the pine nuts monday and the bitterness (that wasn't evident whilst eating them) shows no sign of leaving me.
I truly feel poisoned!

Have you cleaned your teeth?

pellmell · 19/04/2009 10:20

Ahhh, that must be it

Teeth are brushed several times a day,no dental problems at all.

Bitter taste still there....vile taste that spoils everything I eat and drink.
I normally love a cup of tea in the morning but am reminded as soon as I drink a drop how vile this bitter taste is. It is really weird because until eating or drinking it is not there.
I'm sure it makes me sound quite crazy.

Well, I know that everyone gets a nasty taste in their mouths after eating pine nuts, but for it to last so long with you would suggest that there is something in them that you should studiously avoid in future.

Could be selenium, or potassium?

jalopy · 20/04/2009 20:37

Bile reflux? Now that's a vile taste.

pellmell · 20/04/2009 21:01

well I'm pleased to say that is has virtually gone now.
Seriously, i was shocked to still be suffering after a week and as I say when googling (not making a connection to the pine nuts myself)I found loads of info on the pine nut cause.
There is a really good blog (sorry rubbish at links) where hundreds of people have posted saying they have days or weeks of this symptom. Sometimes couples or groups of friends suffering with it............
How strange that it just seems to be thought of as an inconvenient but harmless side effect. Why is it harmless because it tastes like you are poisoned when you are suffering from it!
Anyway.....

This is happening to me! I was starting to think I had some terrible disease! It's day 3 now- hopefully it will go soon because it is really nasty...
