I am wondering why I have no gay friends, no black friends, etc

I have just realised that all my friends are white and straight. I'm not bothered by this...I am quite interested in why it might be. I am totally liberal and don't lead an unusual life in any way (I don't think so anyway).
Is this odd?

Is it where you live?
I grew up in a majority white middleclass town and moved to Norfolk (rural) where it is rare to meet anyone black. I do have a few friends who are black or gay but they seem to have been collected in other ways

Because you live in Dibley? (altho Frank was gay i think)

Callipygia · 12/04/2009 18:04

No I live in a city (not Dibley, ha ha!)
I just never meet anyone not-white and not-straight!
I'm aware that other people do, just not me.

To be fair, you just haven't met anyone who has told you they are gay for all you know you could be meeting gay people on a daily basis!

Well they're all partnered up or divorced, but yes I suppose there could be a bit of gayness going on

I have had black friends and gay friends. Infact one of my uni mates is black AND gay. But I've sort of lost touch with them we lead such different lives now.

My entire social circle was white, married, middle class, English etc etc.

Then I moved. Now I'm often the only mother at toddler group who speaks English when I talk to my dc . It feels better.

i don't know anyone black, properly, either - definitely a minority in my age group and above, around here

but my sister is gay

I used to be the complete opposite; when I lived in central London almost all my friends were male and many of them were gay or black or both.

Now I know hardly anyone who isn't white through and through, and straight. It makes me sad, I've lost that breadth of view which comes from having many different types of friends.

I had never met a gay person until I was 21, I can't even remember about meeting anyone black but it was definitely around 25 or so .

I grew up in smalltownsville. So glad I live in Manchester now and know all kinds of people. Tis great .
