Playmobil lions & a vulture - just gave DD some for her birthday and they have been the biggest success of anything - they can even eat the playmobil children (only when Mum is tidying up playing ). DD is a bit older (7) but I think she would have liked them just as much a couple of years ago.

ds had a leapster 2 for his 4th birthday last month which he loves so I would second that suggestion. I dont think you can go wrong with Playmobil or Lego - he had a playmobil recycling/dustbin lorry which also went down well. We got him a junior basketball net and ball for the garden which he enjoys too. He still seems to like pretty much everything he is given!
