Can you tell me what the different ones are (mean, median etc) and how they are worked out/differ? Use idiot language please!

Mean = add everything up and divide by the sample size.

Median = line everything up in order, and pick the middle one.

Mode = pick the most popular one.

Mean is the average so you add up the total of all the figures and divide by the number of figures
Median is the middle one of a series of figures (ie 7th of 13)
Mode is the most frequently occurring figure in the sequence.

fattiemumma · 18/02/2009 17:12

errm isn't median like middle?

as in if there are 5 numbers the one in the middle is the average.

and mean is where you add them all up and divide by however many there were and thast the mean?

can you tell im not a maths genius

DrillBit · 19/02/2009 20:36

Are we talking arithmetic or geometric mean

MaureenMLove · 19/02/2009 20:40

What happens if you have an even number of numbers? What's the median then?

scienceteacher · 19/02/2009 20:41

The mean of the middle two.
