Sometimes people join these groups so that they can lay into them on the group's wall or discussion board.

So your friend may be a racist bigot who's joined "let's get racist and offensive groups off Facebook..." to argue against that from within. Or he may be a decent chap who's joined this group to argue against it from within. Hard to tell which way unless you ask him...

Can you ask wtf is he doing on that site?
It is appalling and worrying, is it prosecutary (is that a word).
