Stealthsquiggle has pointed out on another thread that the leapfrog alphabet caterpillar recognises swear words and says 'ooh that tickles' while giggling.

did anyone else know this? is this common knowledge?

unfortunately i have the french version 'la chenille abc' and i can only think of 3 swear words in french. (it was a present, i'm not hothousing the kids). but it still works, just in french.

anyway, how many swear words can your caterpillar recognise?

have you put it on the setting 'nom de lettre' with the picture of the frog or caterpillar singing. ie. not ABC, not the crayon and not the musical note?

ToiletRollCover · 06/02/2009 21:19

Did that. Still won't giggle. Stupid thing is going in the bin!!!!

Washersaurus · 06/02/2009 21:21

Maybe you are spelling them too slowly?

dragonbutter · 06/02/2009 21:21

well if your children's toys won't swear i'd put them in the bin too.

So can anyone give me any amusing reasons to justify the existence of our other annoying eletronic vtech toys?

TrinityRhino · 06/02/2009 21:25

Well, I think that is the most that the caterpillar has ever been played with! I have shoved him right at the back of the cupboard again now

dragonbutter · 06/02/2009 22:25

yes, same here, eddison seems happy to have made it out of the bottom of the toy box in the cupboard.

i've never noticed him smiling before.

I have no idea what this caterpillar thing is but the thought of you all yelling swear words at a plastic toy is rather amusing

stealthsquiggle · 08/02/2009 19:18

bran - the caterpillar is doing the swearing - we merely happen to be pressing his feet at the time.

For those looking to increase their totals - you have to be creative - some of them are on 'phonics' mode and others on 'letter name' but it is what the end result sounds like which matters. Washersaurus your DH needs to use his imagination and/or spell faster - we found anything needing more than 4 sounds was tricky to get him to giggle at.

FWIW, I forgave the caterpillar (ours is 6 years old - a purple one) a lot when DS came to start learning to spell - he has the 'alphabet song' firmly rooted in his head because of the bleeding annoying caterpillar and that really helped.

Oh and the fact that he provides the basis for drunken adult amusement helped too
