He sturck it of a lathe anc turned it, mostly - he made beds, banisters, cots, bowls, anything really.

I linked to a site yesterday for CD that does delivery. Never used them, just found them through google but their bulk buy prices compare well to B&Q etc. And they do nationwide delivery.

How do I choose between hard wood and soft wood? Does one burn better than the other?

Hardwood will burn more slowly.
