Nativity Play - help needed - what would a tax collector have worn?

DS is playing Tax Collector No 1 in this year's nativity

Any ideas for a suitable costume?

A tax collector? Interesting play!

What about a suit and a bowler hat? Briefcase and umberella?

I'd just do posh shepherd-type costume (more colourful fabrics, less sheepy, but not as posh as the Wise Men).

Assuming that the pinstriped suit and little briefcase option is out on grounds of frivolity, that is...

Hopefully he'll still fit into last year's shepherd's outfit
I suppose he'll need a bag for his money
