Warning: I got caught by Puschair Sales Scam

I have just found out that the company I bought my new pushchair from is actually one big scam that has been reported to ebay, paypal and the police.

I am so embarrassed as I have been buying online for years and never been caught out before. I feel really stooopid! (I actually spent a lot of time trying to find any bad reports of them before we placed the order and checked that the email address and phone number worked and the postcode matched the address.)

They were selling through ebay but also have their own website (which has what seems at first check to be a legitimate address and contact details).

www.discountbuggies.co.uk

I was lucky, having bought one of their cheaper models, some people spent hundreds on travel systems.

I was horrified to find that their website is still up and running despite the police being informed, although ebay have now removed them.

I was surprised that I didn't find anything on MN about them as I searched several times, maybe everyone else is just better at spotting scams than I am. (Maybe preggy brain affected my judgement this time.)

Anyway, the only good news is that as everyone seems to pay through paypal you can get a full refund buy raising a claim.

There is a huge thread on moneysavingexpert about it if you want to look, but wasn't sure if I was allowed to link to another forum.

Wasn't sure where to list this (am not subscribed to the pushchair lists). At the very least I hope I have managed to prevent some other people from having to feel like I do today.

Don't feel embarrassed. I've just had a quick look at their website and it looks great. No reason at all that you would suspect anything was wrong.

Glad you didn't lose too much but sorry you were caught

moosemama · 20/10/2008 19:43

Thanks, it is a nice looking website, but guess I should've known the prices were too good to be true.

Worst part is it was my parents who paid for the flippin thing so they now have to make the claim to paypal. My Dad's usually such a stickler for these things (Which Reports are gospel and all that) but he trusted me on this occasion.

OH NO! Another forum I go on had a huge thread on these bastards!! We all thought it was a scam, but couldn't be sure to begin with as the website looked great, their feedback on ebay was good. When it came out it was a scam we all breathed a sigh of relief that no-one of us were conned, I thought that someone would have put a thread on here about them

Hope you get your money back

I got caught out on a bugaboo when i was preggy, along with 20 other mummies. She got away with it, and all i got back from Paypal was £112
Im sure PP dont cover the full amount, unless they have changed their policy

what sods though. Can I ask what it was you brought?

moosemama · 20/10/2008 20:17

It was a Mamas and Papas 03 Sport Tundra.

Did tonnes of research on it first and test drove one against other similar types of pushchair.

Not sure whether to buy one from M&P direct now or start another buggy search. Tbh it was the price that was so tempting.

feel so sorry for you....its so annoying when things like this happen. Most of us shop via the net these days and its poor that certain people see it fit to scam others...

I wouldn't be put off buying via the web, depending on where you go you can still get good deals...Kiddicare for example..

xx

I am in the same situation as you. I have been shopping online for years. I to was scammed by this company. Like yourself I luckily bought a cheaper model. I payed via paypal on ebay. I opened up a dispute claim and they have refused to give me any money back at all even though I thought I was insured by them. They said that they had tried to claim the money back from the persons account but there was no money in there. Surely I should be getting the money back from paypal considering they also must have made money on all of the transactions.

I'm not only disgusted with the person that did this i am disgusted with Paypal and will no longer be using their services.

paypal are poor and tbh don' protect anyone. I can't understand or believe them saying they can't refund you as the persons account is cleared...

Dh sold on ebay an xbox when it 1st came out, he sold it for silly money as he no longer wanted it and the person he posted it to had paid on a stolen card .
Dh sent it via courier in faith YET it was a dodgy sale and paypal withdrew "money" from dh's account to refund the person who's stolen card it was iykiwm...

sadly dh was out of pocket mega money. Paypal did feck all..

Told him basically "thats life".

I use paypal BUT tend to limit sales to £100 or less..something I can cope with losing iykiwm...(not that I would like to loose anything..)

Sorry you were caught - I have to say if you do a search on google maps for their address and then zoom in.......wonder how they stock all those buggies in that house (for you)

nametaken · 07/11/2008 12:08

That must mean that all those things at the bottom of the page saying "maclaren approved" "mother&baby star given" etc etc are fake?

Anyway, just e-mailed them to call them thieving bastards .

guyFAwkes - that is a very good tip. Google map their addresses.

CrushWithEyeliner · 07/11/2008 12:14

surely the brand names they use on their website should be informed of what is going on? All we would need to do is call them and explain what is being done with their logo and brand name....

nannyL · 07/11/2008 23:46

for you

agree it all looks fine

edam · 07/11/2008 23:53

I think they may well have just nicked the parenting mag award logos. If I were you, I'd warn Mother and Baby, Prima Baby, Practical Parenting and the rest about this company using their names and apparent endorsement. Then Bauer and all the other publishing companies can set the lawyers onto them.

mamadiva · 08/11/2008 00:01

Oh god sorry you got caught out by this.

Can I just say though how much did you pay for you 03 Sport?

I have the same one and same colour(is my 3rd pushchair and by far easiest to use!) and I paid £160 from Glasgow Pram centre they deliver. and thats the cheapest price we found.

Also being cheeky here but if you are getting that pushchair again I have a Buggysnuggle that goes with mine for sale... its a week old but too small for my 2.5YO DS.
