pubs in london that are quiet, romantic and interesting.

not much to ask I know, but we are going for a night out on Sat and want to find some pubs in new areas in central london that are easy enough to get to, coming from Richmond so tubing it or train to waterloo.

Dh had thought of the area around Great Portland street. Any other good ideas for somewhere a bit different on a Sat night???

A bit out of the centre, but I used to live in Docklands and the area around Narrow Street is great imo (get off the DLR at Limehouse) - there's the Grapes on Narrow Street itself - v. old / characterful / riverfront pub - good fish restaurant upstairs. There's also the Barleymow a bit higher up - less charm, but good for alfresco drinking on a nice evening. Walk down the river path towards Docklands itself and there's loads of river-side restaurants. One of the best things about this area is it's very pedestrian friendly once you're off the main road.

I've spent a few cosy evenings in the Guinea on Bruton Place - other side of Oxford Street from Gt P'land St. Very small, friendly and cosy with an award-winning dining room upstairs. Haven't been there for a few years though so...

Am sure I can think of some more - used to do a fair bit of courting round that area of town

thanks for these ideas, will have a look in a bit. we are in real need of some couple time away from dd(16mnths) so going to a nice pub away from our usual areas is what we thought of trying.

Closer to you than Docklands (though it is lovely andI do so miss it) is the pubs on the river at Hammersmith - you could get off the tube at Ravenscourt Park, walk down to the river and along to the Dove, then along the river (wrap up warm and it's quite romantic) to the black lion
