Is any one else supporting Mary King this afternoon in the Olympic eventing competition?

Can't wait!

[Sorry didn't know where to post this - why isn't there a sport section in Mumsnet - or have I overlooked it???]

It should be a nail-biting show-jumping round...

I really admire her dedication and bravery (especially recovery from breaking her neck in 2001). Not many other 47 year old women competing in the Olympics. Go Mary!!

Counting - I rode at the Yorkshire Riding Centre on and off a few zillion years ago. Was taught by Les, before he died - did you know him? Oooh, and were you there when Chris won Badminton??

Hi again Birdly - sorry for late response - it's a small world !!

Sorry, 'no' on both accounts ..only worked at YRS for two summers.. although I did watch latter on tv ... shall never forget it!!

Another (unrelated) thought ....how can you be a full-time dentist and win an Olympic eventing gold I wonder??? Marius is some horse ...

Onward and upward for 2012 ....

I don't know how he does it either. Must have lots of back-up and a stunt-double dentist mate. Bet he hasn't got kids!

Or maybe he has. Maybe he's a one-man wonder who can drill teeth and change a nappy while simultaneously performing a half-pass. Or maybe it's Marius who does the nappies...!!!

PMSL!!!

wouldn't that be wonderful...??

...in reality I suspect he has a very organised and understandng wife and a fleet of perky groom-esses at his disposal!!

... but I live in hope ...

did you see the rowing this morning? Coxless 4 were thrilling ...

Yes, almost the perfect man - apart from the fact that I'm terrified of dentists!

Haven't seen anything of much other than the eventing, as it's a right kerfuffle to wrestle control of the TV away from the kids (they are CBeebies addicts, I'm ashamed to say ). I ended up watching the eventing online.

Did see a bit of synchronised diving though. I had no idea such a sport existed TBH but it looks pretty tricky. The only synchronicity in this house is when DD and DS both need the loo at the same time!

Fingers crossed for the showjumpers... Have you been reading Will Connell's online diary on the Equestrian Team GBR site? It's really good (and quite funny in places), much better than the 'official' reporting.

Countingthegreyhairs · 17/08/2008 17:16

Oooh, no, thanks for the tip, hadn't spotted Will Connell's blog .. will check it out right now ....

The Counting household could win a synchronised bacon sandwich eating competition ...

Birdly, i used to be taught be Les at YRC, and also Peter Decosomo - do you know him. this was back in the days when chris was on the GB dressage team so just the odd week or so ago. We very occasionally had lessons from Jane and Chris.
Very hacked off today as my BE competiton was cancelled due to the rain - missed the last one with corns (mares not mine) and the one before that was cancelled - grr
will be the bloomin rugby season before we know it and that'll be my eventing cooked for another year.

Birdly · 18/08/2008 07:40

Counting - funny you say that, as the other members of the Birdly household had a bit of a bacon sarnie frenzy yesterday while I was out getting my grey bits covered up highlights done! Did you find Will's words of wisdom?

Loshad - I didn't know Peter. Think it must be about 10 years since I was last at YRC. I went to Les's funeral - always thought he was a wonderful rider, as well as teacher. I was never taught by Jane but I remember riding with her in the indoor school on many occasions and the horses used to get really scared/excited (not sure which!) by the sound of her voice. We'd all then get the giggles and lose control, which wasn't very good I suppose! Hope your corns get better soon!!

Oh sorry Birdly - only just read your last message - haven't been on here for the past few days ...

...Will's blog is brilliant - thank you for pointing me in his direction - all the interesting tit bits especially welcome when tv coverage so scant ...

ahhh... it takes me back to my dim and distant youth ... so dim and distant that I don't even bother to cover my grey bits any more ....have truly gone out to pasture ...
