What was your Saturday job as a teen?

Was thinking about mine earlier. I used to work in a greengrocers and remember it being a terrible job. Freezing bloody cold in the winter and I was frightened to death in the summer with all the wasps swarming around all the fruit. They had an old till where you had to hold down all the buttons together and a wooden box would fly out the bottom. The amount of times I used to slam my fingers in the till. Owwwww! Then moved onto a job in a newsagents - much more comfortable there.

The worst ballet school pianist ever. 3 pounds an hour though compared to 2 for working in a pub.

Smurfgirl · 07/02/2005 01:47

I worked in a supermarket on Saturday or Sunday. I got paid about £25 a day for working 10-5.

I was also a hardcore babysitter and earned £3.50 before midnight and double after, but it always got rounded up. I made a fortune. Oh and I made £20 au-pairing for a little girl 2 hours a night on weekdays.

God I must have been rich, thats like £60+ a week pocket money!

I work p/t now because I am a poor student, so thats like a Saturday job. Its as a care assistant and I work 24hrs a week for £5.05 an hour.

GRMUM · 07/02/2005 07:56

nailpolish · 07/02/2005 08:03

same as nutcracker, i worked in a hotel making beds. actually quite liked it, started early and finished early, about 2pm. if you had a hangover, it was ok cos you just had to go in and do the work, never actually speak to anyone ie customers.

when i was 18 i was 'promoted' to working in the hotel bar, which was good for a laugh and better paid

i was always jealous though of some of my friends who had saturday jobs that were 'glamorous' (well to me anyway), like working in a high st shop.

lucy5 · 07/02/2005 08:03

My best one, the one I dine out most on was working on a Punch and Judy stall. I also worked in supermarkets, holiday camps and a health food shop. Not nearly as interesting!

woodpops · 07/02/2005 08:55

When I was 14 I got a job in an art centre restaurant. Used to work 9-6 for a measley £1:25 an hour and I thought I was rich. Then when I was 16 I got an evening job in a local restaurant and stayed there til I was 18. At 16 I also had a Saturday job in Boots. Then at 18 I left the restaurant, stayed at Boots but got an evening job in a pub. Stayed at the pub for nearly 3 years then had enough one night, cr@p landlord who took the mickey so I walked out. A week later the pub lottery sindicate won the lottery . I'm still working for Boots 12 years later but no longer in store.

tallulah · 07/02/2005 10:40

At 14 I worked in an independent fast food restaurant & got 50p an hour! The worst thing was when it was busy we had to ask the customers to sit on the same side of the table so that we could put other people opposite them! I hated having to do that! Other than that we all had a good laugh because most of the Saturday & holiday staff were 14- 16. All the waitresses went out with the kitchen boys!

Left there at 16 & went to BHS. More money & better working conditions, but not half so much fun.

karenanne · 07/02/2005 10:44

Washing up in the local pub and also serving the food. The pub was on Dartmoor and quite often frequented by off duty soldiers. The food was ordered using a number system - you can imagine the hilarity and back chat I got when I had to go out and shout No.69! - I refused to serve that number after that so it got missed out!! I also frequently had the classic 'there's a fly in my soup, miss' (there never was!). I used to say 'don't shout or they'll all want one'!!! or 'aren't you lucky, extra protein for free'.!

Miaou · 07/02/2005 11:05

My first job was at a local dog kennels, cleaning them out and exercising the dogs. Don't remember how much I got paid, but I got a two hour lunch break!!! (the owners used to do their weekly shop then and so closed for two hours). The only thing I didn't like about it was that the owner had a radio in each section blasting out Radio 2, which at that time (in my eyes) played ghastly music. I used to switch it over to Radio 1 when he wasn't around!

Beansmum · 07/02/2005 11:07

I worked in a petrol station for $40 a day when I was at school. That's not as much money as it sounds and it was an awful job. Not hard work just dull.

Gobbledigook · 07/02/2005 11:10

Tesco checkout while doing GCSEs and Alevels.

WHSmith cash office while doing another year of Alevels (after a summer at Camp America).

Spoils kitchen shop while at uni.

Gripping stuff eh! Really glad I did it though - met loads of people and it's all training 'in life' isn't it - plus of course learning the responsibility of getting places on time, earning your own money.. Would certainly encourage my own kids to do the same.

Beansmum · 07/02/2005 11:12

Worked for mcdonalds during my first summer at uni, and 2 summers ago worked selling books door to door. OMG that was a crappy job. I actually lost money because I had to go home early

mummygow · 07/02/2005 11:16

Worked in Dolcis and if I remember right got something like £2.79 an hour and a discount on my shoes!!!

Then went to work in Mcdonalds - thats how I ended up fat

Plus whilst working in Mcd's when I went to college I started working in an afterschool care - firts in the mornings to give kids breakfast then to take them to school then on my day off during the week.

But then I went big time at the end of college and went to work for YSL in the cosmetic dept in Frasers woohoo!! (lost 3stone in here to try and fit in but obviously I have fat genes cause I'm a big heiver again)

Tessiebear · 07/02/2005 11:45

Dogwalking, Paper round, washing up at a restaraunt on a saturday night (this was the longest 5 hours of my week and the first week i was too shy to ask for rubber gloves!!!) Waitressing in a pub - not all at once

SeaShells · 07/02/2005 11:55

Selling tickets in the box office of a big arena, met alot of pop stars and very famous footballers! Loved it!

moosh · 07/02/2005 12:08

Working on Saturday at "Chelsea Girl" anyone remember that! Then went to Superdrug after a year and worked ther through all my college years (4) on Saturdays. Loved both jobs totally.

iota · 07/02/2005 12:23

First job: general dogsbody in a pub at age 14 for 30p an hour - £12 per week for a 40 hour week in the holidays.

Graduated to a pet shop, then Debenhams at 16 for a princely £7.50 per Saturday.

littlemissbossy · 07/02/2005 12:26
