Help! I need a wheelchai accessible route to the Museum of Docklands

DS would like to go to Museum of Docklands a his birthday treat during the day tomorrow.

We have not yet received a Blue Badge, so we won't be entitled to the Disabled parking for the museum.

I understand the DLR is accessible - is there a DLR station which has parking nearby? Or a tube station that has a good connection to the DLR, is accessible and has nearby parking?

We live in Streatham so I would prefer not to have to drive to the farthest SE reaches of the DLR!

OR is there an NCP close tothe museum, and I'll just suck up te £zillion per hour?

AFAIK, unless you drive miiiles, you'll have to pay a fortune to park near any of the DLR stations, or the wheelchair-accessible Jubilee line stations which connect to the DLR. So I think it might work out easier to park at Canary Wharf shopping Centre, although I don't know how ££ this is during the week.

The DLR is accessible. Jubilee Line is accessible. There are stops from both lines nearby. The Canary Wharf area is pretty wheelchair-friendly, ime. (I don't use a wheelchair - but I do know there are lots of ramps.)

There are quite a few DLR stations that are in the middle of nowhere, relatively speaking - you could probably find on-street pay and display parking near a lot of them. Stratford, which has the Jubilee line and the DLR, isn't far away, and deffo has parking that isn't bogglingly expensive. (I don't drive - so may be wrong about prices.)

Daytime weekday parking at Canary Wharf is very expensive.

I'd bet parking at Bermondsey or Canada Water wouldn't be deadly.

Here's the Canary Wharf rates:

The public car parks offer weekday parking for visitors for up to two hours for £3.50, for two to three hours at £5 and up to four hours at a charge of £9.00

Oh - the Canary Wharf parking isn't half as expensive as I thought! Some of those NCP places in the city and West End charge £12 per hour

Stratford and Canaa water are good ideas too - there is that shoping centre over the roa fom the bus station at Stratford that has a car park.

DS, of course, actually wants to go on the DLR!

it's a bit hard to get from the carpark in stratford to the station. you have to go down in the lift then cross roads & then get up to the platform. i've done it with a buggy, but wouldn't guarantee wheelchair accessibility. i'd park in the carpark behind the museum. you could always take him for a round trip on the dlr after the museum.... oh, & last time we went to the museum, the resource room on the ground floor was only open in the afternoons (i had 2 disappointed girls to placate at that point). hope boyblu has a good birthday .

I think the closest DLR station is East India Quay. It has a lift from the platform to the ground level. Then it's just a couple of hundred yards to the museum.

Blu, why not ring the Museum in the morning, explain the situation and see if they can come up with anything inspired.

It would not hurt to ask.

I think will ring the museum - they do have some Blue Badge spaces which need to be reserved...I could explain - it's not as if DS's leg and it's 3.5 kg of metalwork sticjing through it isn't obvious! The earls Court Dr Who exhibition people loked at him in the back of the car and waved us straight into the free VIP parking, Blue Badge or no!

Thank for the tip re the inter-active room - BoyBlu has been there before (with the lovely boys of another MN-er) and enjoyed it so much he wants to go back for his b'day! It seems that on this occasion the Hirnimann just won't do!

And yes, a trip in the other direction, down to the Thames Barrier on the DLR will be good - I quite enjoy that trip.

We have to spend the morning at the hospital anyay, for routine x-rays, metalwork MOT etc.

Blu could you maybe drive to Stratford (there is parking round there I'm sure) and get on DLR? I know it is wheelchair accessible as I have DS3 who won't get out of buggy!

Thanks, everyone for your help.

I did indeed call the museum and they were most obliging. We parked in their disabled spaces right outside, and the acompanying entourage of grandparents / aunt parked in the car park in the cinema complex behid the museum - for £5 for the afternoon, so all very successful.

We also spent a fun 15 mintes watching the city boys try their hand at hitting golf balls onto a small floating golf green that had been set up in the dock for some charity or other.
