Are you left or right handed? A couple of questions.

Just wondered if you use your non-dominant hand for certain things.

I'm right handed.
I hold the phone to my left ear (so I can hold a pen I guess)
but I carry ds with my left arm and always hold a crisp packet with my right and use the left to get the crisps out.

Not a very interesting thread but just interested if anyone can be bothered to tell me which hand they would use

my poor gran at school had her left hand tied behind her back

biglips · 26/01/2005 21:09

im right handed
i text on my phone with my left hand
im a left handed pool/snooker player

very right handed - iykwim. find it very awkward to hold/carry the dd's left handed.

mil is very left handed in all she does except she writes right handed - we wonder if she was made to do that at school.

db had an old fashioned teacher who tried to make him write right handed - he is a leftie but then does lots of things right handed too.

nailpolish - my brother solved that problem he turns his hand right round ( hard to explain suffuce to say it looks very awkward) turns his page upside down and writes right to left. Very awkward but very neat.

dh and I think dd1 is going to be a leftie!! she is showing a strong preference for that hand.

colditzmum · 26/01/2005 21:31

I am right handed but carry ds with left, carry my bag on my left, and for preferance, lift anything heavy mainly with my left, hold a crisp packet in my left..... although I broke my right arm 3 years ago, and it never set properly cos I made them take the cast off after 3 weeks so I could ride my motar bike. so that may have something to do with it

onlyjoking9329 · 26/01/2005 21:31

i am left handed hubby is right handed, have identical twins one is left handed and one is right handed

Posey · 27/01/2005 20:43

Thanks for all your responses.
So as I thought, there appears to be little rhyme or reason for a lot of it.

For those of you that remember, I used to be a bit of a "here's another theory of mine" thread starter on here, but have been a bit lax recently. I like theories, and then having them totally disproved on here

Did you know you are left and right eyed as well? Everyone has a dominant eye, which can affect certain things you do (learnt that when I was rifle shooting - targets, I hasten to add)

PicadillyCircus · 27/01/2005 20:53

I'm right handed.

Hold the phone to my right ear (have never managed to hold a phone at the same time)

Carry DS with my left arm - I think that lots of mothers do; it's got something to do with them being able to sense your heart beat better on that side so mother instinctively do it I think.

Hold crisp packets with my left hand and use my right to get the crisps out.

fairyfly · 27/01/2005 20:55

I am left handed and i have a couple of problems with it, i smudge my writing if i use a fountain pen, i cant saw wood and hold the end unless i clamp it in a wierd position. I cant play the guitar without changing the strings round.

nailpolish · 27/01/2005 20:56

FF im left handed too and i hate fountain pens SO MUCH

jodee · 27/01/2005 20:58

I'm a leftie.

But use mouse in right hand. Hold phone to right ear, so can write with left hand I guess (but is there such a thing as being left or right eared? It always sounds "odd" when I listen with the phone to my left ear!

Dominant right eye tho.

moondog · 27/01/2005 21:00

Left handed but use my right hand for a mouse as that was how I was taught (only learned that you could change it to the left a few years ago and it was too late by then!)
Where did you get the lh tin opener np?
I think there's a shop in London full of stuff JUST for left handers. Would love to visit!

Going to have a gripe now - why do all computer keyboards have the number pad on the right? I always have to use the numbers on the top.

Any packet with a leaflet in it (eg, ibuprofen), I always open the wrong way around, so I can't get at the tablets and have to go in from the other end (just a minor gripe, but I always do it!)

It annoys me that the slot on the ATM machine is always on the right, as well as the ticket barriers at stations - MAJOR gripe!!!

MistressMary · 27/01/2005 21:22

Cheque books annoy me, not left hander friendly.

fairyfly · 27/01/2005 21:25

My mouse is in my right hand though, never noticed that before

lilsmum · 27/01/2005 21:39

im left handed, use the phone to my left ear left hand, carry dd with my right arm right hip, use a mouse with right hand, scissors with left

alison222 · 27/01/2005 21:40

I'm left handed and hold my children on the right side so that I have my left hand free. I eat with my knife and fork the right-handed way around but other than that am left handed pretty much I think
Hold telephone to left eat andtuck it under my shouklder when I need to write.
I did once get left handed cheque books but didn't make much difference. I could never get the hang of a lefthanded ittalic fountain pen I managed perfectly well with a normal one. Left handed scissors are fab though
I turn my paper sideways when I write so a fountain pen is fine as I don't smudge

lilsmum · 27/01/2005 21:41

to all left handed people..... do you write with your hand curled round slightly? i do and quite a few people say its weird to see

MistressMary · 27/01/2005 21:45

Yes I write with my hand curled round, but for a good reason yes!
I don't want my writing to be smudged.
My partner does this thing and turns the page to one side so he writes vertically? Looks bizarre and from a left hander too!

fairyfly · 27/01/2005 21:47

I write vertically and curl my hand, so much so that my nails have actually broken the skin in my palm after too much writing, not that it happenms a lot

alison222 · 27/01/2005 21:50

No I don't curl my hand I write like Mistressmarys
partner with the paper sideways
