Email Monitoring / Safeguarding?

My DD2 (15) was called in by Head of Year today, who interrogated her about sending an email externally (to me and my wife) in which daughter said she felt dizzy and sick at school.
I was quite taken aback. Is it normal for schools to monitor (external) email in this fashion? I wondered whether I should take this up with the school directly.
She's on their watch list because we've had concerns about her eating, but really this is an unrelated matter, and even so, I didn't expect them to be monitoring email between us and her in this fashion. Unless I've got totally the wrong end of the stick somewhere along the line here.
Have other people experienced this?

I havent directly experienced this, but at my sons school, a child had somehow managed to access a website that was disturbing to my son and somehow bypassed their security. I spoke to the headteacher and he told me that anything like this notifies the council who then contact the school. So in my area the council monitor outgoing things. I wonder if it is the same at your daughters school, especially as she had used your email which isnt connected to the school, so its pinged up. Its good in a sense, as anyone could send an email and it be dangerous, so they have acted quick.

Ex teacher

it was made very clear to us that it could and would monitor emails.

in general if people were discussing personal or social stuff we had private emails (so home emails via web access) or people used whatsapp

the general rule was that you should write emails like they were public and going to court.

yes they absolutely will monitor students emails.
