mum's freezer full all local friends freezers full, just managed to borrow a beer/wine fridge from fried but thats it..got ALLSORTS in freezer as well as normal chips and pizza have chicken fillets, cod fillets, steakF*CK!

We will/are needing/getting another one when kitchen starts but that wont be for weeks!..so have got to go and get one like yesterday!..our new (planned) kitchen has built in fridge freezer..but if we want a decent make and frost free they cost the earth!..dp thinks we should have f/f on show instead and save on that plus unit, but i dont...argh....am having a right day

Any tips (apart from eat the lot!) on how to salvage some of the food?

Have packed it all into 3 of the 5 drawers and put the better stuff(chicken/fish) in cool bags inside the freezer, will this work? for how long?

Could you pick up a cheap second hand one to tide you over, you could sell it on again when you've got your new one.
I'd cook anything that's defrosted, and use it up as soon as possible.

Knock on doors of everyone in the street???????

I got a call from a woman I know only by sight and took in what I could for her.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/06/2008 20:07

I don't know if you can talk to your insurance company about replacing the food?

PinkChick · 11/06/2008 20:11

LOL sorry for laughing there but the reason we're having to replace kitchen is due to flood, i think the insuance company would put phone down on me..ive ahd to ahssle them for 4-5 months to get sorted

dont know neighbours well enough to ask them tos tore food, WILL cook as much as poss..odd thing just happend...i packed everything together in freezer to keep it all cold for as long as poss..we had choc ices which were really soft so i threw out...the icepops are rock hard??????eh???

lulumama · 11/06/2008 20:13

leave it closed, will hold the coldness for 24 hours i think or take it all out, wrap in bin bags and a duvet and it will stay cold.

get a cheapy one from somewhere that advertises in the back of local papers , you know the ones, taht sell reconditioned/dented appliances. my mate got huge chest freezer for £80

fishie · 11/06/2008 20:13

choc ice = mainly fat so won't stay frozen.
ice pop = mainly water

so the first thing to do is work out what costs the most and either cook it, eat it or find it a new home. ice pops aren't worth saving!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/06/2008 20:15

lol! sorry poor suggestion then!

PinkChick · 11/06/2008 20:39

its okay chick..thans for tip re icepops..dp will think ive very intelligent now...thought about gettting cheapy/second hand one but its then getting a van and most places(shops) will deliver very quickly..problem that im just finding now is that if i want a decent make(had candy/hoover/hotpoint-this one! in past and broke down quickly) and i do def want frost free, were looking at upwards of £500!! plus then the casing for it to be intergrated..or do i buy a normal 60cm frige freezer and make do with it sticking out like sore thumb in my soon to be nice new cream kitchen??..couldnt have white with cream units, dp doesnt like silver..OFFS!!!

What about a lush black one or cream? If you are spending £500 on an integrated one, how about spending a tad more on a gorgeous showy one?
Depending on your kitchen style, the retro ones are lovely as are these

Or you could go a bit wild

PinkChick · 12/06/2008 10:09

wow i like the orange one!, but maybe a tad bright for my cream and wood kitchen..but i like the idea of something like that!

I feel for you. The freezer door has been left open all night and we had to been pretty much everything. Last night, we thought ours had gone kaput, but thankfully it is just the light thats gone. I felt really bad though as i'm always cursing the fact that the fridge freezer is smaller than I would've liked, when i'm trying to feret out Toms dinners!

BexieID · 12/06/2008 20:22

Um, that was supposed to say, pretty much bin everything. I like that orange one too.

lilyloo · 12/06/2008 20:27

look on freecycle see if anyone giving one away to tide you over

Hassled · 12/06/2008 20:35

KEEP THE LABELS! Then you can put in a claim on your household insurance (so my SIL tells me anyway) and prove how much the stuff was worth.
