I've been told in the past that if there are local beekeepers then they might come and take it and put them in a hive

EffiePerine · 09/06/2008 11:45

a swarm in June is worth a silver spoon

apparantly

ring local bee-keepers and see if they want one

bethoo · 09/06/2008 11:46

i think they are protected (honey bees) if you do nto know any local beekeepers contact the council and they can arrange for someone to pick it up for you i think.

misdee · 09/06/2008 11:47

was going to suggest finding a beekeeper as well.

beansontoast · 09/06/2008 11:48

i have just done what you have suggested and yes!...soem locals are now buzzing round!

and a very nice bunch they sound too

Council will destroy it, but will be good for advice, re keepers.
But at least you'll have your silver spoon.

littlefrog · 09/06/2008 11:50

oh i want a swarm...

EffiePerine · 09/06/2008 11:52

well go round to beans' house with a basket

foofi · 09/06/2008 11:53

We had a swarm in our garden last summer. The local bee enthusiasts are happy to come and get them for a small donation, but it depends how accessible the bees are. The first time they came, they couldn't reach them, but they came back later in the day when the bees had moved to a smaller tree. (Tends to be weird old men with beards who don't have great ladders etc! ) Your local council will have a number of someone like this!

Goober · 09/06/2008 11:54

I'd like a swarm too, or half a dozen.
I could put all the spoons on Ebay and be rich........ish.

EffiePerine · 09/06/2008 11:55

well if you find one in May it's worth a load of hay. Rather less useful

Goober · 09/06/2008 11:59

Oh, I agree.
I'll order mine now for 2009.
