Neighbour complained about dryer

I have just had a text from my next door neighbour saying my tumble dryer is too loud and its "having a significant adverse impact on their quality of life".
For context, we live in detached houses, its on carpet in the utility room, I'd say there is at least 6ft gap between the houses, with cavity wall and a fence. I don't run it early in the morning or late at night. I'd say it runs between 10 and 3 if that. Its an eco one, so it does go on for about 3 hours, but uses little electricity. I have 2 kids, who play lots of sports and I have clothes I need to get dry.
What do I do?

Just tell them it isn’t on even if it is 😆

Smug

Ugh.

Then open that window again immediately. You aren't doing anything wrong by using your tumble dryer. He can go to the other side of the garden if he doesn't want to hear it. Nasty git.

I very much doubt that but that will help your narrative that he is being unreasonable so you can ignore him.
You said he thanked you so I would guess he is grateful and relieved.

Isobel201 · 31/10/2025 17:09

the dryer in my utility has a vent through the wall, is there an option to vent it through the external wall?

Elephant788 · 31/10/2025 17:36

Do absolutely nothing!

wizzywig · 31/10/2025 17:38

Id mess with them and say you dont have a dryer or any machine in the utility room

Judecb · 31/10/2025 17:45

They sound round the bend to me! How on earth can they possibly be hearing this??!

Ask if you can come round and listen while the dryer is running.

My tumbler dryer is on at the moment and I can’t hear it so if they can from another house, they must also be able to hear you typing to start this thread!

I wouldn't entertain your neighbor with a response. We all put up with "living" noises. It's a way of life
You are being more than reasonable to running it in the middle of the day.
And what's texting all about? You only live next door. Have people forgot the art of conversation.

dh280125 · 31/10/2025 17:53

Ignore.

grizzlyoldbear · 31/10/2025 17:54

I really think communication like this is unconcsious weird attention seeking. Ignore ignore ignore

MNNnnn · 31/10/2025 17:55

I would open the window op. Maybe start keeping it closed when the dryer is running a bit more often, but if it needs it, open it. It sounds like he'll always have something to complain about and you do not owe him anything. You re allowed to live in your house as you see fit as long as you are behaving reasonably, which you are - there is no street hierarchy...

HereWeGo1234 · 31/10/2025 17:57

I would keep a note of all his texts, comments etc. because as the years go on (unless he goes deaf) he’s going to get worse not better.

Mandymoogenx · 31/10/2025 17:57

Telm them its your vibrater not your dryer and to mind their own business.

Isinglass20 · 31/10/2025 18:00

The photo looks as if next door’s have converted their garage into a living area so that’s what they’re complaining about.

well that’s their problem. Should’ve thought of that before the conversion.

Dawnb19 · 31/10/2025 18:08

It would be annoying if it was the middle of the night but it isn't. I can hear my nextdoor neighbours and that's in their shed but they need to dry clothes. 🤷

Iziz · 31/10/2025 18:10

They are crazy do more washing for me 🤣🤣

rosie1873 · 31/10/2025 18:10

Alisonelli, I think the suggestion of other poster/s of nicely asking if you could please call round and have a listen next time she hears it is a good idea. 😀
If queried, you could say you want to know how much sound-proofing you will need.

Letskeepitrealpeeps · 31/10/2025 18:12

If she sent this complaint in a text then you must have at some point been on friendlier terms otherwize how does she have your number....and if so why send a text and not come and speak to you ...
I'm guessing theres more to this and maybe the noise is either you being a deliberate pain in the ass because you have falling out or shes being difficult and creating drama for same reason....
Go see her lifes to short ,sort it out over a cuppa and both of you get over the reason its all started becoming silly.

When he thanked you, I hope you told him you haven’t changed anything!

alisonelli · 30/10/2025 14:33

UPDATE!!!
He's text again saying
"The level of noise and vibration we have experienced in recent months is not acceptable to us. We have lived here for 36 years and have never been troubled by tumble dryer noise before. The problem may be your machine"
I have just stood by the utility room and you I could hear a slight rumble. Shut the teeny window and couldn't hear anything.
The picture is of the gap between the houses and the dryer is on the attached internal wall.

This is mad! You sure he's not hiding IN your utility?

Stickonstars · 31/10/2025 18:19

Farkinhell · 30/10/2025 14:02

Absolutely nothing.

Seconded

BeddysMum · 31/10/2025 18:22

That's a very strange complaint to make, especially if your house is detached! Are your neighbours trouble makers perchance? The wording also sounds suspiciously "legal" too like they are trying to intimidate you.

You're not doing anything wrong, and not even running it in antisocial hours, so they can pipe down IMHO!

Even in a block of flats it would be tough luck in the daytime!

If you are on good terms, you could go have a chat, otherwise ignore it. It's ludicrous.

BeddysMum · 31/10/2025 18:23

Re your update, if they continue to harass you about this, you could report them to the police because this is very unreasonable behaviour and could constitute harassment.

alisonelli · 30/10/2025 14:46

Its about 5 years old and we have been here 2 years. The old owner didn't have a dryer, which is how they never had problems with them.

I had my Bosch dryer in 2016 and it is still going strong and is not noisy.

Take heart, when my disabled living extension was built, there was an xpelair fan on the wet room which was obviously too noisy for next door because they put stones down it, and two replacements. In the end I just left it.
