Really not sure what to do! He is in such a bad way, he looks beautiful but when you get a little closer…. He is a short haired vizla, don’t normally smell to this extent and literally crawling with fleas (now we all are 🤦🏻‍♀️) , especially when we were shocked to pull up to a mansion to buy him.
I doubt I’ll get my money back, perhaps if I returned him, but I don’t want to return the poor little guy.
not sure what to do, I guess it’s a case of booking a vets appointment tomorrow and go from there? Spending much more on a puppy than I planned to.
I will report her to RSPCA when I’ve spoken with a vet tomorrow xxx

Yes you need a vet asap. He could have mange which is a pain in the arse to get rid of. You also won’t be covered by insurance as they are pre existing conditions.

Typicalwave · 17/08/2025 23:25

Sounds like you’ve come across a puppy mill.

Did you get to see the puppies with mum?

Also - Vizla! Hope this isn’t your first dog. Or you’ve done your research.

Faith3101 · 17/08/2025 23:27

Gutted about the insurance 🤦🏻‍♀️ I knew instantly, this is all on me. I brought him without checking him over properly too…. Kinda glad I didn’t. Glad I got him out of that house. No idea what this is going to cost. Or if most people would keep the poor little guy in this situation or take him back. His nails are awful too xxx

Did they sell him with insurance?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 17/08/2025 23:32

I don’t think anyone would take him back. What was the set up? How many dogs did they have?

BreakingBroken · 17/08/2025 23:40

please it's BOUGHT! you bought the puppy with money presumably.
OR your brought home a puppy, past participle of i'm bringing home a puppy.
that being clarified
simple flea shampoo this is not a difficult condition to treat.
shampoo with flea treatment is easy to purchase and no need for vet approval, depending on his age you will want to discuss other flea treatment options either with the vet or the pet store staff.

Start with a simple flea shampoo.

MillingAround · 17/08/2025 23:43

Did you look into this breeder at all before buying a dog from them?

Poor little thing, get him sorted and give him a good life.

Obviously report the scummy breeder.

Typicalwave · 17/08/2025 23:46

Also I’m sorry to say theres a really good possibility Hes going to have more medical issues than you bargained for. I hope not, but it’s really common with shitty breeders.

BreakingBroken · 18/08/2025 00:17

no matter how "professional" a dog breeder first stop should always be the vet.
depending on the age of the puppy it should also have been started on de-wormer (which is very common even from the best of the best breeders).
but just like flea shampoo, de-wormer is not expensive and very effective.

ThePinkPoster · 18/08/2025 00:32

But you must have visited before now?

Faith3101 · 18/08/2025 09:30

No, although it is my first Vizla. I haven’t had a dog for a few years since my german shepherd passed, a pup I got from one of my mothers 5 german shepherd.
My dad trained police dogs before retiring.
I also worked at a kennels for over a decade with multiple different breeds day in day out. So I’m not too concerned wether I’ll handle it. I’ll have to wait another 18 months till he is fully grown until he can walk 10 miles with me.
everything went smoothly, was shown his papers and bloodlines, met his mother (of course).
It was clearly their huuuuge house, but it was evident the dogs weren’t the most well cared for, just not how evident until we got him home and looked back in hindsight xxx

They had several different breeds, two of which were mixed. It just didn’t seem that way at all but looking back in hindsight…
I also feel daft for assuming a big fancy house makes it more likely the dogs are well cared for.
Not sold with insurance. Feel so daft, but I’m not taking him back to that 💩 hole, no matter how pretty it looks from the outside.xxx

No 🤦🏻‍♀️ now he’s insured but obviously not covered for pre existing conditions.
I’m a little overwhelmed by the cruelness.
according to my partner I am naive, and it doesn’t occur to me that someone could be so neglectful of a puppy.
I was up all night with him last night.

One thing I did think was odd…. He’s had one set of injections 6 weeks ago, they’re normally 2-4 week apart.
I can’t believe people would treat an animal this way and I’ve just taken him thinking all is okay.
I am glad I’ve taken him though!
I just want to rip the woman’s face off, I’ll keep the puppy however. I’m glad she lives 2.5 hrs away…xxx

Oh this is sad. Please do whatever you can to get them shut down as dog breeders OP.

You didn’t assume they were well cared for, you said in your reply before this one you could see they weren’t the best cared for. But it’s done now, the puppy will likely be fine after some vet treatment, make sure you insure him as soon as you can. Everyone makes mistakes and it’s a minefield out there, but just make sure you learn from this event and don’t add to this issue again if you ever get another puppy. Enjoy your puppy OP!

MugPlate · 18/08/2025 10:22

How much did you pay?

BreakingBroken · 18/08/2025 18:09

did you give the pup a flea bath? have you made a vet appointment?
you've not mentioned the age of the pup, is he well past weaning, eating well?
and as you mentioned immunizations and wormer??

ninjahamster · 18/08/2025 18:14

How did you get on today? What did the vet say?

Belladog1 · 18/08/2025 18:16

Awwwww, my last dog was a vizsla. Gorgeous, affectionate, wonderful dogs.

Your dog will, I hope, but just fine after treatment. I wish you many years with your wrinkly dog. Its a shame when those wrinkles iron out

Mrsplants · 18/08/2025 18:49

Can you notify the vets who did the vaccinations too? If they are aware they may be able to keep a closer eye on the owners.
my main worry is if you were showed the real mum or if she’s in a kennel somewhere covered in fleas too ☹️ aren’t breeders registered with the council? If you contact the council they should be able to do a drop in.. hopefully unannounced to catch what’s really going on. Google the local council and the department that deals with dog breeders
