Is DD likely to have a National Insurance number?

She was born in the UK, is a UK citizen with a British passport and we moved to another country when she was two. She's moving back to the UK and I don't know whether we need to apply for NI number or just apply to have a letter sent with the number (different online forms).

Did you ever register or claim child benefit in UK? We had one who was born here, another born overseas and both had NI numbers.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 18/05/2025 14:37

I don't think we claimed child benefit for her as we knew we were leaving. We did for our older child.

Look on gov. Uk and maybe phone up DWP

MissAmbrosia · 18/05/2025 14:39

Did you have a child trust fund? The Gov one? Not sure when they stopped it...The reference number for that is her NI Number. My dd is exactly same position - we moved abroad when she was 2.

Stressybetty · 18/05/2025 14:39

It gets assigned when the parent first claims child benefit in the UK I think and then sent out automatically before the 16th birthday. If you didn't claim child benefit she may not have one.

YorkshireIndie · 18/05/2025 14:40

She can apply online for a NI Number. She will need to provide ID (passport etc)

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 18/05/2025 14:46

Right, I think what I'll do is apply for one for her. Then if she already has one they will say so and hopefully tell her what it is.
