Is it easy?

Can anyone do it?

What will I need?

What do I need to know?

cupcakes just clip their wings and then they can't escape. it's really quick and simple, just like trimming a child's fringe.

theshrimp · 19/05/2005 19:44

Cupcakes -I think we are thinking along the same lines although I think I want something a bit more traditional looking for my ducks/chickens. I am sick of brightly coloured plastic in the garden so no Omlet for us! Although I bet it's really easy to clean.

Thanks everyone for all the advice about cats . . .this never occured to me as my Grandfather kept cats and chickens and never had any problem.
I wonder if Call ducks( very small) would be OK with a Mad Burmese and an even crazier Bengal cat?

KatieMac · 19/05/2005 22:04

I get 2 silkies (sp) tomorrow
I'm picking them up after school with DD & her best friend (in a cat box) & we have the exrabbit hutch ready (with a perch). We have food and a bag of food.

Have I forgotten anything?

I'm really excited

Good luck KatieMac

ooh KatieMac silkies are my all-time fave chickens ever . I had them all throughout my childhood, they are such a lovely, gentle and tame breed, and of course beautiful to look at - I used to show mine and always won junior trophies. They can't fly so you don't even need a high fence. What colour are you getting?

KatieMac · 20/05/2005 16:40

White (I think) - but I can't get them now until MONDAY

Oh shame. I saw your name on here and hoped you would be telling all about them.
Have you got any ideas for names?

KatieMac · 20/05/2005 22:19

DD is leaning towards Martha & Margaret, but I'm not sure about the reasoning behind them??

KatieMac · 23/05/2005 18:01

OK quick question

How do I get my chickens innoculated against Salmonella?

The Vet says he has to buy 500 doses at a time and as he doesn't do chickens regularily - he will charge me

But OFSTED is sure to want them injected
Help

I can really recommend a couple of hens as family pets. I had 20 years of keeping chickens when we lived in the country, but now we are confined to a tiny Victorian backyard in a city centre hens were out until the eglu came along. It is actually very good value for what it is and most importantly for avoiding family disasters, it is foxproof. More than I can say for the various wooden henhouses I used to have. You don't need a high fence - clipped wings mean a 1m fence keep mine away from the veggies. If you get a couple of hybrid point of lay hens they come ready vaccinated and are unlikely to go broody. If you want more details then go to my website www.citychicken.co.uk
You can contact me through that and I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Hey! I've arranged to collect my chickens on Saturday 10th July. I am getting 2 light sussex chickens and have decided to call them Flirty and Gertie

my girls will look like this

I did try to get dd to think up names but she's under 2.11 so was short on inspiration.

There is muchos excitement at the carefully household.

handlemecarefully · 28/06/2005 12:37

Hey it's okay - feigned shared enthusiasm re my chickens will do if you can't muster up genuine excitement

assumedname · 28/06/2005 12:41

fishfinger · 28/06/2005 12:41

fishfinger · 28/06/2005 12:44

handlemecarefully · 28/06/2005 12:44

Perish the thought!

assumedname · 28/06/2005 12:45

Post how you get on, hmc.

I love the idea of keeping chickens, but I think I've read too much about what could go wrong and it's putting me off slightly!

handlemecarefully · 28/06/2005 12:47

I shall assumedname.

I've read a couple of books and researched it through various means. I think that fox proofing is the biggest challenge...
