Why would there be water at the bottom of it (about an inch) after we've only been using it for a week?

Blocked filter? There's usually one in the floor of the dishwasher that you can remove completely.

Otherwise no idea I'm afraid!

Make & model of dishwasher?

I think it might be because dh opened it before it had finished
