My dh has owned a car for a few yrs but it turns out he never registered it in his name and the car is from Northern Ireland...He bought it from a car salesman over here.
Since the rules changed and you need an owners doc to get a tax disc he has had to keep the car in a garage because he can't get a tax disc.

As Iam his whipping boy for most things and get blamed for everything that goes wrong with his life he has now decided it is my fault and I should have sorted it out ages ago.
After all I just sit on my ass all day whilst he works.
The problem is I have no idea who to call what to say or How on earth to go about getting an owners document. Dh says the car can go in my name as I think he suspects the owner might be in trouble for not regesting it earlier.

He has coldly imformed me that my car is being sold and my new car is this one in the garage with no tax so unless I sort it out I won't have a car.
Can anyone please help me??

How has he been getting a tax disc for it in the past? I have just opened our renewal and it doesn't say you need an owners certificate, jsut the renewal form, MOT and insurance certificates.

In fact, how has he been getting the renewal form for a tax disc considering it is not registered in the UK or under his name?

SoupDragon · 12/01/2005 19:56

I know you've always needed the registration document plus an application form if you've lost your renewla notice but you say he's had the car "for a few years" so does that mean he has never purchased a tax disc for ir in that time?

pixiefish · 12/01/2005 19:59

has the car been taxed since being in the uk? If so then I can't understand why he hasn't had any paperwork through for it

louise1974 · 12/01/2005 21:46

Yes the car has been taxed in the past when you didn't need a owners document. He doesn't get a renewal form because the dvla here have no record of it. He hasn't been using it for a while it must be at least 18mths. the car was always insured motd and taxed until he needed this foem then he stopped using it. Its all very confusing and it makes me so angry that he gets in this situation then blames on it me. Did I buy the car? Did I forget to register it when I bought it ? no. Yet its all my fault because apparently sorting out his mess is in my job description.

I guess you really do not need to hear that your Dh is complete tosspot, but he is.
So if you are caught without tax... who gets fined? The old owner
Who gets the tax renewal?
The DVLA have an obligation to sort it out and to help you sort it out
If you have previously being paying tax then keep pressuring them?Surely you have not been paying car tax to DVLNI every yr pre owners evidence??

LIZS · 13/01/2005 11:55

Like pixiefish, I don't understand - haven't you in the past also needed the Documents from DVLA, plus MOT and Insurance Certificate to get a Tax Disc anyway or have you previously had the equivalent from NI. My knowledge is a bit out of date but I always used to present those documents at the PO anyway when applying.

Can't he just contact the car salesman for the transfer of ownership documents or is it a matter of pride now ?

SoupDragon · 13/01/2005 12:01

IIRC, to tax the car you need the renewal form (from the DVLA so car has to be registered) plus insurance and MOT. If you do not have the renewal, you need a form from the PO plus the registration document. This has always been the case (have taxed cars both ways in the past ). I thought it has always been impossible to tax the car without a renewal or the registration document therefore surely the car could not be taxed. This hasn't changed as far as I can see from the renewal form I've just received. Interested as to how he's taxed the car in the past.

louise1974 · 13/01/2005 15:50

Soupy in the past he used to go to the po with just his insurance documents and mot ...If you didn't have your owners document with you which obviously he didn't all you had to do was fill in some form saying it was lost and asking for a new one. He was then given his tax over the po counter and his form for a new doc would be snt to the dvla , He never got a doc from them because they had no record of the car , Well the
y probably knew of the car just not the owner.

This has now been changed and you need either the reminder form which he doesn't get because its not reg in this country or the owner doc which again he doesn't get.

However thanks for the phone number Not sure who it was I rang them today and thay are sending me a form to fill in.
