Bizarre reason for not quitting smoking in pregnancy

lazarou · 09/05/2008 00:59

My uncle rang my mum the other day to tell us his wife is pregnant. My mum asked if she had given up smoking. His reply 'Well, she can't give up completely. We're theatre goers'
Of course!!!!

Smoking is banned in theatres now, as in all public spaces, so she won't need to bother...

madamez · 09/05/2008 01:10

While it's not actually the end of the world if she doesn't give up, I am utterly bemused about what theatregoing has to do with compulsory smoking.

lazarou · 09/05/2008 01:12

She does smoke like a chimney, as does my uncle, as do all their friends in fact. They live in Antwerp. Everyone seems to smoke there (big generalisation)
Anyway, they smoke instead of eating. My uncle even uses one of those cigarette holders. Well, she is smoking for two now.

Yes madamez, that's the bizarre thing. The excuse. I imagine it is hard to give up, but to blame the theatre!

I've seen plenty of pregnant women in Belgium smoking. I don't think I've ever seen a pregnant woman in England smoke.

ChirpyGirl · 09/05/2008 07:28

I've seen loads of pregnant woman smoking in Britain, mostly outside the anc or labour ward

ChirpyGirl · 09/05/2008 07:29

(meant to add) and at theatregoers, as if you should have realised that!

SheikYerbouti · 09/05/2008 07:30

Rofl at "we're theatre goers."

Belgo - you need to go to Weston-super-Mare. There's lots of pregnant women chugging on snouts there - I saw loads of them yesterday. In fact, I saw a woman smack her DD for choking on crisps The poor kid was turning blue, so she smacked her on the thighs and said "STOP CHOKIN'" Nice.

How are you Lazarou, me old Trowbonia chum - I haven't seen you on here for AGES!

QuintessentialShadows · 09/05/2008 07:35

What an utterly astonishingly stooopid thing to say. I hope you gave him a bolleaux-ing.

When I was young and smoking, urban and gorgeous, theatre, jazz and film loving, I too used a sigarette holder. [useless piece of irrelevant information emoticon]. And a silver case for my sigarettes, and a silver Lighter. Gosh I was so glamorous. Cant see why your lifestyle should be more important than the life and health of your own baby though...

belgo · 09/05/2008 07:37

I will keep my eyes peeled next time I'm in Weston-super-mare

SheikYerbouti · 09/05/2008 07:56

Oh, you should go Belgo - all forms of life are there

lazarou · 09/05/2008 09:18

Hi Sheik
I've been up to all sorts. I've been doing a course with the ou so that's why I've not been on. I've another one starting soon so I thought I'd play on here before it starts.
I think my aunt and uncle actually bought an old theatre and they put on their own productions. They did send me a clip of them 'performing'. I use the term loosely, there was quite a lot of wailing. I keep getting invites to go and see their productions, but it's all in Dutch so I can't understand any of it.
Apparently, my aunts sister's baby isn't well, but my uncle didn't seem to know whaqt was wrong with her and like he says 'We've got our own problems with our own baby on the way' She's only about three months gone!!! He really does talk utter shite.

Good to see you back!

Your uncle sounds like a nutjob. I am still loling at "we're theatre goers" a few hours later.

lazarou · 09/05/2008 09:53

Some of the things he says are quite funny. He seems to have reinvented himself as some sort of bohemian, but he doesn't fool me. I've seen pictures of him as a teenager on his cb radio, and there is also a picture somewhere of him standing with his arm around his idol-Marc Almond! If I find it I will put it on facebook.

Go to the Mumsnet group - I am one of the admins. I'm the one with the Oirish surname.
