Help - 50 wasps just flew into my house

Noticed a nest a few days ago in the eaves at the front of our house but googled and it said leave at this time of year as they will die off soon. Husband had to leave early today and when he opened the front door about 50 flew in, we think they were attracted to the light. We've left the lights on in the hall and closed all other doors and they seem to be hovering around the light fittings. I'm in my bedroom and scared to come out and dreading DS waking up who is terrified of wasps. Help!!!

If it's safe to leave your front door open, do that and turn off the lights. Or open windows - they should fly towards the light.

imissmascara · 06/10/2024 06:05

Turn the lights off and open the windows!

I hate wasps. I had a similar issue and realised I had cover for pest exterminator on home emergency cover so they came and sprayed. The ones in the house I hoovered up, they kept on finding their way into bathroom upstairs somehow there was twenty plus in there. Do not empty your hoover into inside bin as they survived 😱 directly into outdoor bin and wear a big coat and leg it.

Op someone needs to cover themselves completely and go down, switch the lights off and open the door. Is your husband down there?

twomanyfrogsinabox · 06/10/2024 06:11

Haven't you got a fly/wasp killer? Give the hall a good spray (from the doorway) retreat quickly, shut the doors leave it a while then sweep them up. Obviously don't handle dead or dying wasps. Cover yourself as well as possible first, and turn the light off where you are going to spray from.

mrspk · 06/10/2024 06:13

No, my husband had to catch an early flight so is on his way to the airport. From inside I can see loads more on the front door so I daren't open it. Maybe I should open the back door and hope they go that way? I'm just scared of more coming in, just googled that there can be thousands of wasps in a nest 😱

And every kind of bee is attracted to something sweet flowers sugar but there could be a smell coming off the light bulb as it heats up and it smells sweet could be light but it's rarely a light that attracts any kind of bee. Bees are attracted to something sweet so there could be a scent a smell coming off the light bulb or there's something in that room that is. If you can, you can dot is to remain calm talk to them gently like you would a child look them in the eye and if you're not afraid they'll hover in front of you and you talk them and walk them to the door they'll leave if you don't get confrontational with them, you can get them back on course they'll be grateful I have one little yellow jacket that comes to see me when I come home if I'm sitting out of front porch she comes and lands on my shoulder cuz I fed it some of my cannoli once but bees are cool

Workiskilligme · 06/10/2024 06:19

@MaxSmartass wasps aren't bees!

Wallywobbles · 06/10/2024 06:23

Wasps should fall to the floor when there is no light. Personally I'd turn the light off and Hoover them up. Or leave them where they are and call the exterminator.

How do you look a wasp in the eye?

Fakepower · 06/10/2024 06:30

Turn the lights off and open a door

There were 6 wasps just now in my bathroom. Where the hell are they coming from ????

waitingforthebus · 06/10/2024 06:33

Lights off back door open OP. Good luck!!

mrspk · 06/10/2024 06:35

I don't think looking them in the eye and sweet talking them is going to work for me. I'm going to call pest control when it gets to a reasonable time. I just peeked in to the hall and they seem to have dispersed, can only see a few, but loads still on the outside of the front door.

SBHon · 06/10/2024 07:21

This is my idea of a nightmare. When you say dispersed where have they dispersed to?

mrspk · 06/10/2024 07:42

Well I thought they had dispersed, I've now realised they have settled in clusters on the 2 light fittings. They are still and silent. Now it's light outside I have turned the lights off and opened the back door and then run back to bed.

At this time of year the wasps are half dead and not particularly buzzy. They’re very unlikely to sting, you can easily swat them or catch them in a glass and put them out. But if you’re frightened of them you can ignore them until they drop dead. It’s very cold, they won’t last more than a day. In fact I’d be surprised if they’re still alive at teatime.

Oh good lord I'm itchy just looking at that picture.

Can you fashion a biohazard suit out of a few layers of thick clothes, a coat, gloves, a hat, mask and some goggles and just go on a murderous rampage?

This is in fact my standard protocol when a wasp enters my house. The prep tends to take so long that the fucker flies off somewhere else and I have to track it down like dog the bounty hunter.
My weapons of choice are a size 10 slider and some deodorant. Sometimes shaving foam if they're stuck in the corner of the windowsill.

Some may call it overkill.

mrspk · 06/10/2024 08:40

Panic over I think. Just emerged from my bedroom to greatly reduced wasp population. Hopefully they went out the backdoor. Have sprayed the remaining with a mixture of water and washing up liquid (thanks Google) and it seems to have done the trick. Thanks for the support, Mumsnet is always there any time of day for any tricky issues!

Ha ha, didn't think of deodorant, will get the dove ready in case of any stragglers, and luckily DH has huge feet so I'm off to find a size 13 slider. Watch out wasps.
