How do I dispose of a piano?

Nero · 21/04/2008 10:19

I got a piano off Freecycle a while ago and we now want to get rid of it. I have tried Freecycling it for the past 2 months but there is no interest in it whatsoever (cos it is quite big, ugly and battered).

Any ideas of how I can dispose of it? (Short of taking a chainsaw to it)

Call some local Piano dealers.
They may take it off your hands.

Schools, Collages?

marina · 21/04/2008 10:21

Oh nero, it's no help, but I am so tempted to suggest you give Laurel & Hardy a call

sparkleymummy · 21/04/2008 10:22

How about asking a local nursery? they won't mind if its battered. they can paint it

Nbg · 21/04/2008 10:23

Or call some local piano tutors.

Nero · 21/04/2008 10:26

DH is on the phone to piano dealers at the moment. They want to charge us £350 +VAT to dispose of it

I think that chainsaw may be coming out after all

if it comes to it your council will take it away. ours charges £30 for large items

MerlinsBeard · 21/04/2008 10:29

advertise in your local newsagent.

some ppl don't use freecycle

BetteNoire · 21/04/2008 10:29

Marina.

Nbg · 21/04/2008 10:43

£350!

Are they having a laugh?

Nero · 21/04/2008 11:03

Thanks Sparkleymummy. We didn't think the council would take it, but have phoned them and they will. £60 to get rid of it - but much better than the £350 we were quoted earlier today!

mankymummy · 21/04/2008 11:22

try ringing the local schools, nurseries, old peoples homes... surely SOMEONE will want it?!

Pavlovthecat · 21/04/2008 11:23

Oh shame. I want a piano too! Lucky you are not close really, as DH would have a fit if he came home to find a piano in the front room.

mummyjaguar · 21/04/2008 11:23

We got rid of a sofa bed we thought nobody would want at the local charity shop. They came and collected it and then sent me a letter when it sold telling me how much for so that I could gift aid. I couldn't believe someone paid £40 for it.

jesuswhatnext · 21/04/2008 14:34

if all else fails, give it to the PTA, they can do a 'piano smashing' at the summer fete!

should raise a few quid

avenanap · 21/04/2008 14:35

Are there no old folks homes that want it? It can be a bit boring for them. I think they would really appreciate it.

Muuuuuuuuum · 21/04/2008 14:42

a friendof mine couldn't give her old piano away - it was an old out of tune upright - not pretty granted but you would think someone would want it. they ended up scrapping it.

misdee · 21/04/2008 14:47

that is such a shame. if you were close to me and i had the room i would have it. but am in herts, so too far away.

fizzledizzle · 21/04/2008 14:48

we gave our piano to a local homeless shelter apparently someone who came in regularly used to play the piano when they were younger and they got a lot of pleasure from having the opportunity to play it again. i wouldnt of thought of it but my mums knows the lady who ran the shelter somewhere like this might be worth a try

Woollymummy · 21/04/2008 15:05

Stick a big sign out by the road saying "Piano for sale, £60, collect it yourself and put the money through the letterbox" and someone might just help you out by wandering off with it. Seriously though, charity shop would be the best bet. We grew up in the 70s with a knackered old £2 piano from the local church hall, very badly out of tune and very very fun. i am sure someone will want it.Free ads in the paper?

booge · 21/04/2008 15:07

Only recently there was a thread on here mocking a freecycler for asking for a piano, now it seems you can't give them away!

Mozart1 · 14/12/2019 10:10
